A Genius Solution For Stinky Feet

Sweating–not the most glamorous topic in the world, but a problem that affects all of us ladies in one way or another.

One of the biggest problems I have, especially come summertime, is the issue of sweaty feet. A lot of my shoes, while adorable, aren’t exactly breathable. This leads to sweating, which invariably leads to stinky feet.

While the problem of smelly feet is annoying enough as it is, what’s worse is when it causes you to ruin a pair of shoes. I’ve had plenty a pair of cute ballet flats that have had to be tossed before their time due to funky odor.

That’s why I’m loving these new shoe inserts from Chu Su New York. Called Silver Linings, they’re super-thin liners infused with silver-based technology. Silver is said to be antibacterial, so it will kill the bacteria that causes funky odors before it has the chance to invade your footwear. It comes sold in a set of three and each pair lasts for up to one month. They’re a great way to extend the life of your shoes, saving you some major $$$.

The Happiest Hands On Earth!

Method_mickey_mouse_Hand_soap.jpg (Blog Post)

The minute this new hand wash hit my desk, I was smitten. What’s not to love? It’s part of a limited-edition collaboration between Method and Disney that includes two hand soaps in the shape of everyone’s favorite power couple, Mickey and Minnie. Both foaming hand washes are naturally derived and biodegradable, so they get your hands clean and keep the planet green.

You can’t help but look at this adorable bottle without feeling like a kid again. Method has done a fabulous job of enhancing that feeling with the scents of the soaps–Mickey has a lemonade scent, while Minnie is Strawberry Fizz.

The soaps will be released the first week of April at and, so be sure to stock up before they sell out. They make a great gift for the kids in your life, or for those who are just young at heart.

DIY Diva: The Shiny Hair Rinse

People who have shiny, smooth hairstyles are the luckiest people of all. I mean, who wouldn’t want lush, glossy locks instead of frizzy, frazzled strands? If you weren’t blessed with shiny, healthy hair like Selena Gomez‘s, I’ve got a super-simple at-home treatment that can fix that, no expensive keratin salon treatment required.

First off, you’ll need two cups boiling water and two to four tea bags, depending on your hair length. Brunettes should use regular tea like Lipton, blondes should use chamomile. Steep the tea bags in the boiling water for 5 minutes, then remove. Let the water cool. Jump in the shower and wash and condition your hair so it’s nice and clean. At the very end of your shower, take the cooled tea mix, tip your head back and pour it over your hair, being careful to keep it away from your face and eyes. Do NOT rinse it out. Towel dry hair (be sure to use a dark towel as this mixture could stain a light one), then style as usual.

This is a treatment that should only be done every one to two months. Repeated use of tea can change your hair color, making it lighter and even brassier so it’s best not to overdo it. Also, it’s a good idea to wash your hair with cool or lukewarm water, as that can also increase the shininess.

A Sweet Skin Care Treat

Sugar, in all of it’s various incarnations, is one my very favorite things. Give me some sort of dessert dish and I am a happy girl. This love of the saccharine is definitely apparent in my beauty routine as well; my bathroom cabinets are lined with everything from lip scrub to body lotion that prominently feature sugar.

My current new favorite sugary delight is from the oh-so-chic (and oh-so-cheap!) line Kings & Queens. Their Queen Elizabeth Sugar Shower Gel and Body Butter are two of the sweetest smelling potions I’ve ever had the pleasure of sniffing. Inspired by Queen Elizabeth’s purported love of sugar, Kings & Queens has fittingly launched this sweet duo, which features pomegranate, lotus, hazelnut and grape, avocado and sunflower oils to pamper your skin.

While you may not be able to throw a four-day festival of sugar like Queen E herself (lucky wench), you can create your a mini-devotion to sweet treats by lavishing your body with the Queen Elizabeth Sugar Shower Gel and Body Butter. Available at Target stores nationwide for $8.99 and $14.99 respectively, they are pampering products that are fit for a queen, yet affordable on a pauper’s budget.

Beauty Goes To The Dogs

My 2-year-old puppy Ellie is one of the great joys in my life. Any dog owner will tell you that having a dog is an amazing experience. It’s also an expensive one: Ellie, being a young and energetic puppy, thinks that running and rolling in the dirt is quite possibly the best game ever. When it’s raining that dirt becomes mud and I then have one dirty, grimy pup on my hands. Dog grooming is expensive, and if I took her to the groomer every single time she got dirty, well, there’s goes my cute shoe allowance.

Fortunately there are some really fabulous dog grooming products on the market that are not only way cheaper than your average professional groomer fee, they also work almost as well, if not better than some human products.

Kiehl’s For Your Dog line is made with the same quality and all natural ingredients as the people line. It features a shampoo, conditioner and cleansing spritz, which I found to be my favorite from the line. It’s a waterless shampoo that’s great for between baths and helps cleanse your dog’s coat and skin. It’s phenomenal for getting rid of that dirty dog smell, leaving behind a fresh, botanical scent on your furry friend’s coat.

Don’t be fooled by the cute and quirky name: John Masters Organics DogPoo is a total overachiever. The organic shampoo not only creates a super-shiny and soft coat, it also wards off nasty fleas and ticks with essential oils of tea tree, eucalyptus, neem and citronella.

If your dog has super long hair or is a non-shedder like Ellie, it’s also wise to invest in a conditoner. I like Fur by J. Mikel Moringa Seed and Calendula Foaming Detangler, which helps to reduce dryness, repel dirt and loosen knots, which is a real blessing if your pup hates being brushed.

Each of these products cost less than $25, contain natural ingredients that are safe for your dog and are Ellie-tested, Ellie-approved. Happy bathing!

Making Memories At The Olympics

I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics, as a guest of P&G Beauty, an official sponsor of the Winter Olympic Games. While there I got a chance not only to see two of the events (Ice Dancing and Speed Skating, whoo hoo!), I also got to spend some time at the P&G Family Home, a literal oasis for Team USA and their families.

The Family Room

P&G put a strong emphasis on family with these Olympics (if you’ve been watching NBC’s coverage at all, you’re sure to have seen the beauty brand’s adorable “Thanks, Mom” commercials) and the Family House was the culmination of this. Divided into five levels, it featured themed rooms that catered to all members of the family. On the first floor was a giant “family” room that was stocked with pillows, chairs, laptops and two giant screens so people could watch the various events.

The second floor contained a concierge service that gave updates on everything from the days medal counts, to event procedures to things to do in Vancouver. The third floor was home to a bevy of branded rooms, including the “Man Cave”, aka the Pringles room. Did you know there are over 22 flavors of Pringles? I sampled a good portion of them, including some oddball ones like Cheeseburger and 3-Layer Mexican Nachos. Like I said, a little crazy. The Man Cave also contained video games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero to keep the boys (and girls!) entertained.

Also on the third floor was a Tide laundry service that did laundry for the families and the athletes, which turned out to be an unexpected blessing. We heard that the Olympic Village only provided quarter machines, so athletes were spending precious time feeding quarters into a washer and waiting for their laundry. More than a few of them were ecstatic about the Tide service as it freed them to focus on more important things, like competing.

The cutest room in the house, The Pampers Village!

The Pampers Village was by far one of my favorite rooms in the house. It was an area designated for the little ones and their frazzled parents. Many of the athletes are parents to young children, so having a place for their kids to play and just escape all the insanity was invaluable. I loved all the cute toys and the oversized bench.

Rounding out the third floor offerings was the Crest and Oral-B room. Here they got all high-tech on us, offering a green screen which you could pose in front of and be superimposed into an Olympic-themed scene. I chose to go the Shaun White route and get my snowboard on. I totally look believable, right?

Getting glammed up at the Beauty Lounge

Finally there was the fourth floor, which held one of the fave rooms in the house: The P&G Beauty and Grooming Lounge. It was stocked with all the latest goodies from CoverGirl, Pantene and Olay and featured a friendly group of Vancouver beauty pros who provided everything from leg massages to blowouts to makeup application. I had my hair done by the fabulous Liz, who gave me a super-bouncy curly hairstyle using Pantene’s appropriately named Ice Shine Maximum Hold Hairspray.

All week I heard inspiring stories from athletes and their families about how wonderful the P&G Family Home was. My favorite story came from bronze medal-winning speed skater Chad Hedrick and his family. His gorgeous wife Lynsey was getting her makeup touched up in the Beauty Lounge and told me all about the many special moments her and her family had shared at the Family Home.

Lynsey, Hadley and Chad are all smiles in the Pampers Village.
Photo: © Procter & Gamble

Chad and Lynsey’s 11-month-old daughter Hadley took her first steps in the Pampers Village with her proud parents looking on. “It’s been she and I and Daddy’s off training for the Olympics, so our big concern was whether he was going to be able to see it,” said Lynsey. “It just turned out that he happened to be there and she decided to walk. I think she’s trying to follow in her daddy’s footsteps with wanting to blow everybody away with new things.” That wasn’t the only big news for the Hedrick clan. A few nights later, Lynsey’s younger brother proposed to his girlfriend of four years in the main dining room in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

I asked Lynsey if it was safe to say that the P&G Family Home had provided her and her family with lots of great memories and she was enthusiastic in her response. “It’s incredible. From the laundry to, especially for me, the Pampers room where Hadley can play and be entertained and be happy. There have been so many special memories made at this house for my family. I wish I could go around and hug every person here,” she said.

Pocket-Sized Hand Sanitizers

I had a major gross-out moment on the subway this morning. I commute from my apartment in Brooklyn into our Manhattan offices by way of three subway trains. One of those trains, the L, is notoriously crowded in the mornings. So today as I was carried into the train by a crushing wave of angry people, I settled into a nook that had me sandwiched between two burly men, desperately grasping one of the train’s poles to keep myself from falling.

Now, because of the girth of these two men, and the fact that I was all bundled up in my winter paraphernalia, I couldn’t really turn my head or body to look around at what was going on. Midway through the train ride, my purse started to slip from my shoulder. I let go of the pole to hoist my purse back onto my shoulder and as I was doing so, someone in the vicinity of my pole let out a mighty sneeze. I then put my hand back on the pole, only to feel something wet and sticky in the place where my hand had been. Apparently the sneezer hadn’t been able to reach their hands up to cover their face mid-sneeze and ended up spewing who-knows-what all over the subway pole. Gross.

And that dear friends is why I always, ALWAYS, carry a bottle of hand sanitizer in my bag. It’s not like I could rush to a bathroom to instantly wash off the gross gunk on my palm, so I had to wait patiently until I could dislodge myself from my burly bookends and then frantically scrub my hands with sanitizer. Again, ew.

So, yes, I am one of those people who is constantly pulling out the hand sanitizer. I stock up on bottles of sanitizer like it’s my job. That’s why I’m loving these reformulated Bath & Body Works PocketBac Anti-Bacterial Hand Gels. They come in 18 awesome fragrances that kill germs and feature moisturizing Tahitian palm milk to keep your hands soft and supple instead of dried out and chapped. Best of all, they’re only $1.50 a pop, so they’re easy on your hands AND your wallet.

Turns out I’m not the only fan of the pocket-sized protectors. The BBW team hit Sundance last week in their Anti-Bacterial Van spreading the germ-killing love with the stars. Fans of the PocketBac included Malin Akerman, Ryan Gosling, Terri Seymour and America Ferrera.

Photo: © Bath & Body Works

But perhaps my fave celeb story is that of Joan Rivers. Apparently Madame Joan carried her bag of BBW goodies up and down Main Street, telling everyone and anyone how cute the PocketBacs were. The photo at left of her checking out her bag is priceless. Bath & Body Works PocketBac– kills germs, softens hands, smells great and is Joan Rivers-approved.

Streamline Your Smile

Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips.jpg

Have you ever wandered down the beauty aisles in your local drugstore and just been completely overwhelmed? There are just so many items to choose from on everything from your toothpaste to your conditioner. I like having options as much as the next girl, but when it takes you 30 minutes to find a face wash, you know things have gotten out of control. Which is why I appreciate a new initiative by Crest to streamline their teeth whitening products.

The brand is introducing 3D White, a new line of products that will replace all existing Crest whitening products. The five new products include 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips, Vivid Toothpaste, MultiCare Whitening Rinse and two new toothbrushes from Oral-B.

3D White is set to launch in March, but Crest wants to give you the opportunity to experience it yourself before the official launch. Starting today, you can log on to the 3D White website and purchase the Professional Effects Whitestrips before it hits stores. Even better, when you purchase the Whitestrips, you’ll receive a free, full-size bottle of the MultiCare Whitening Rinse AND the Vivid Toothpaste. What’s not to love about that?

Beauty Secrets Of An Olympian

Growing up as a kid, I wasn’t exactly what you would call athletic. Sure I participated in sports, but I definitely wasn’t the star athlete. More often than not my innate klutziness would cause me to trip over my own feet mid-kick in soccer or beam my best friend in the face with a softball (sorry about that Jenn). So I’ve always had a lot of respect for those people who are, in fact, talented in sports and/or have normal control of their motor skills.

Because of my serious lack of hand-eye coordination, the Olympics have always held a special interest for me–being able to watch incredibly talented athletes compete in their prime is just an amazing thing. I never imagined that I would one day have the opportunity to actually speak face-to-face with an honest-to-goodness Olympian, but that’s exactly what happened a few months back when I sat down with ice dancer and Olympic silver medalist Tanith Belbin.

From left: Olympians Tanith Belbin, Vonetta Flowers and Allison Baver.

Tanith is one of four “spokesathletes” for beauty giant Procter & Gamble. The brand is an official sponsor of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and Tanith, along with skier Lindsey Vonn, bobsledder Vonetta Flowers and speed skater Allison Baver will appear in a marketing campaign for the brand. I sat down with Tanith at the shoot here in NYC and got her secrets to keeping her skin and hair in tiptop shape in the harsh winter weather. Read on for her winning tips!

With all of the time you log on the ice, your skin and hair must take a beating. How do you keep them looking great in the winter?

Winter weather or not, because I’m a figure skater, I’m always in the cold and I’m very aware of what those climates can do to your skin and hair. I definitely want to stay hydrated. I try not to wash my hair every day and I use Pantene’s Ice Shine Shampoo and Conditioner–it’s just perfect for me! It gives my hair that glow without weighing it down and gives it that shine and glisten that makes it look really healthy.

Dry skin is my number one problem and since I get up at 5:30 AM to train, I don’t always have time to douse myself in lotion. I’ve started using body washes like Olay’s Body Wash plus Crème Ribbons which have body butter infused into them. I definitely feel like I have that layer of hydration that sort of stays with me. It’s not just the cold climate [that makes my skin dry], it’s also what I do in ice dancing with my partner. It’s a lot of grips, lifts and flips and my skin gets a lot of friction so I like to use something with an almost medicinal level of moisturizers like Olay Quench Advanced Healing Body Lotion.

Photo: © Procter & Gamble

I was a figure skater when I was a kid and I vividly remember the sheer amount of makeup we would have to pile on our faces. I used to have to go home and scrub my face raw in order to get it all off. How do you remove all of that makeup and still keep your skin feeling and looking its best?

I’ve obviously tried every kind of makeup remover there is. My skin is sensitive and a lot of those makeup removers make my skin red and irritated, making it hard to put makeup back on the next day. I use Olay Daily Facials Cleansing Cloths because they take everything off really easily and, with all the traveling I do, they’re really convenient because I don’t have to worry about bringing liquids with me.

I try to take good care of my skin, but it’s nearly impossible to keep it perfect when I’m piling on makeup, traveling and dealing with the stress of competition. I just try to be diligent and I always, every time, wash, tone and moisturize. I also exfoliate my skin a couple of times a week.

What is your number one beauty travel tip?

I’ve learned that when I fly I have to take my makeup off. Going up in that altitude, everything just comes right to the surface. No matter what you think or who you’re going to be seen by on the plane, just take your makeup off and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. When you’re flying for so long and changing altitudes and climates and countries, you get really dehydrated so just try to keep moisturized.

The girls work it for the photographer.

What’s your one, can’t-live-without-it budget beauty buy?

I always buy mascara. I know that people say that there are certain products that you need to spend the money on, but I think that mascara is the number one thing that I find is best at the drugstores.

CoverGirl has the new LashBlast Length Mascara that I love. The brush has a thousand little bristles and it narrows at the end so it’s very far-reaching and helps you get that little wing at the end of your lashes. I don’t wear a lot of makeup when I train so I find that a bit of mascara and a flushed face are all I need to look fresh at the end of the day.

Now for some even more exciting news: The fine folks at P&G have invited me to head to Vancouver next month to provide you with live coverage of the Olympics! I’ll be on site in Vancouver from February 18 through the 21, bringing you the all the scoop on the medal race and the scene at the Olympic Village. Stay tuned for more info as the Olympics approach!

Making A Connection With Malin Akerman

Photo: © Jason Merritt/Getty Images

I’ve told you guys before about how awkwardly star struck I get around celebrities. It’s not often that I get to meet stars in the flesh, but when I do I’m usually a train wreck of stuttering, blank smiles and awkward pauses. So needless to say when I learned I would be attending an event sponsored by Crest and hosted by the gorgeous Malin Akerman (of 27 Dresses, Watchmen and Couples Retreat fame), I was equal parts excited and nervous.

Fortunately my nervousness was unfounded as Malin was an absolute sweetheart. She made all of the editors and bloggers feel totally at ease. I had the good fortune of sitting across from her at our dinner table and she regaled us with tales of her Swedish background (that explains her gorgeous look!), growing up in Canada and her brush with sports glory (she’s a trained figure skater who almost made it to the Olympics).

Malin hosted the event to help spread the word about a fabulous contest that Crest Whitestrips Advanced Seal is running on their Facebook page. From now until Dec. 1, head to Crest Whitestrip’s fan page and share your story for what loved one you most want to connect with this holiday season and why. The winning entry will be given travel fare to make that connection come true! Head to the Crest Whitestrips Facebook page to enter the Holiday Connections Contest.

Malin was also there to share some of her holiday beauty and travel tips. Check out the video below to find out her holiday survival essentials as well as her fondest holiday memory. Isn’t she adorable (and isn’t that Yigal Azrouël dress to die for)? What’s your fondest holiday memory?

Banish Bad Breath

One of my biggest beauty fears is bad breath. I get super paranoid when I’m talking to people, especially after a flavorful (read: garlicky) meal, that my breath is causing them to take a step back. I do the usual brushing two times a day, but there are just some times where you feel you need a little something extra.

Up until now I haven’t been a big proponent of mouthwash, mostly because I didn’t feel like it lasted long enough to justify all that stinging. But when the new Scope Outlast Mouthwash landed on my desk, I decided to give it a shot, mostly because I had just inhaled a big bowl of pasta and was convinced I was wafting stinky garlic fumes throughout the office.

Now when it comes to pain tolerance, I’m the world’s biggest baby. Listerine and I are not friends; I can’t make it more than five seconds without spewing that stuff all over my bathroom sink and whining for 10 minutes about the “pain.” So a mouthwash’s sting factor is a big decider for me on if I’m going to use it or not. I tentatively swished around the Scope and found that it was less a stinging feel and more of a tingling sensation, which was totally manageable.

What really surprised me though was that well after I was done using the mouthwash my mouth continued to feel tingly. That was equal parts awesome and odd. It took some time to get used to the sensation, but it also helped me feel like my breath was indeed fresh because I could actually FEEL it. I used it at lunch time and went through a bunch of meetings without a passing thought on how my breath smelled.

The secret behind the long-lasting freshness is the brand’s Outlast technology: it binds tightly to your mouth’s receptors so that that initial fresh feeling stays in your mouth, lasting up to five times longer than regular mouthwash. I’ve been using the Mint flavor every day now and I’m minty fresh all day long!

How do you keep your breath feeling fresh?

Beauty That Gives Back

October is , a time to band together to fight for a cure and to support and celebrate survivors. It’s also the month in which the beauty industry unveils a massive effort to give back.

Many beauty companies offer special products made specifically for BCA. These pretty pink goodies aren’t just fun to look at, they’re also part of a mission to help find a cure. A portion of the proceeds from these special products are donated to various research foundations to help support and help those women living with breast cancer.

Saving money is important, but if you’re looking to stock up on new beauty necessities, now’s a great time to do it. You can get some really fabulous limited edition items and the money you spend will go to a worthwhile cause. If that’s not a good reason to spend I don’t know what is! Below are a few of my favorites, but check out,,, and other online retailers for more great products that support the cause.

Sonia Kashuk BCRF Brush Up On Pink Purse Set
When it comes to cute and functional, Sonia Kashuk’s line of brushes, bags and cosmetics is the best. This holds especially true for her collection of products made in collaboration with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I love the vivid pink pattern used on the collection. My favorite right now is this four piece-brush set– it features all the essential makeup brushes you need, housed in a gorge little bag. Best of all, 15% of the purchase price goes to the BCRF to help prevent and find a cure for breast cancer.

Essie Yes We Can, Pink Nail Color
A neutral pink polish is a must-have for your manicure kit and I absolutely love this pretty pastel shade. It’s a limited edition hue that was created specifically for Breast Cancer Awareness. Proceeds from the formaldehyde-, DBP- and toulene-free shade will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering women affected by the disease.

Avon Crusade Tote
This cute cotton canvas tote was designed for the brand by the revered Marimekko design company. It features the company’s famous floral graphic — a stylish and arresting statement. One hundred percent of the net profits from this $10 bag will be donated to the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade.

These are just a few of my favorite BCA products, but there are literally tons of products out there this month. From tweezers to body wash, it doesn’t matter what you buy, just get out there and start shopping!

The Best Way To Fight Stress

Thymes Moonflower Bath Salts

It’s been a hectic few weeks around here for me — first Fashion Week, then the Emmy’s right after and now we’re starting to dive into our holiday coverage! Needless to say, I’m zonked. Worst of all, I can’t stop stressing about all the things I need to do. It’s all a bit too much for my poor over-taxed noggin and the stress is starting to bring me down.

Fortunately I’ve got a tried and true fix for relaxing after a taxing day or week (or month!). If you can’t afford a pricey spa trip — and really, how many of us can in this economy — you can create your own spa experience at home. The key is to create a routine: A series of steps that, when combined, create a signature treatment.

Mine starts out with a nice hot bath. I run the bath water, then shake in a bubble bath or bath product. I’m recently obsessed with the new Thymes Moonflower Bath Salts — the scent is made up of a blend of cinnamon, quince, myrtle, amber and cognac that creates a warm, but still very feminine, scent.

The Face Shop Pomegranate Fresh Fruit Mask

As I steam and soak, I apply a face mask to detox and refresh my skin. I’m totally into sheet masks at the moment (a pre-soaked, face-shaped cloth mask that you apply to your face — they are HUGE in Asia), specifically The Face Shop’s Pomegranate Fresh Fruit Sheet Mask. It’s made with all natural pomegranate extract to help hydrate and revitalize my tired complexion. Usually you just remove the sheet and you’re good to go, but I like to rinse my face off afterwards because I’m prone to breakouts and don’t want to aggravate my pores. If your skin is super-dry then I’d leave it on so the ingredients have a chance to sink in.

Sometimes if I’ve had a really tough day, I’ll also grab some tea bags, steep them in hot water, let them cool down and then place them on my eyes for about 10 minutes. They really help to decrease puffiness (great after a long crying jag or a sleepless night) but definitely be sure they are completely cool — your eyelids are very fragile and you don’t want to burn that skin! You can also use cucumber slices, which have the added bonus of smelling great.

Depth Coconut Bay Hand & Body Lotion

Once I’ve fully soaked and decompressed, I hop out of the tub, towel off and slather on a rich body lotion like Depth Hand & Body Lotion in Bay Coconut. Something about that tropical fruit scent makes me feel at ease and the certified organic essential oils and botanicals make my skin feel fab.

Finally I throw on a fluffy robe, curl up on the couch with my puppy and immerse myself in a good book. Who needs deep tissue massages and uncomfortable spa wraps when you can have this kind of lazy afternoon? I truly think this is one of the best cures for a bad day, whether you just had a stressful time at work or hit a speed bump in your personal life.

How do you unwind after a rough day?

Scent Of A Vacation

American Grown Collection

Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer (boo!) and one of the busiest travel seasons of the year. Or at least it used to be. According to AAA, the number of people traveling over the long weekend will drop by over 6 million, down 13% from last year.

Depressing news, especially if you’re one of those people affected by the recent economic downturn. I hate the word “stay-cation” but the idea of finding a way to create that travel mentality without actually going anywhere is kind of a good one, especially if you’re feeling down for not being able to travel.

To put yourself in a vacation state of mind, I love these hand soaps and body washes from Bath & Body Works. Called the American Grown Collection, it features five scent families based on different U.S. destinations. Pining for a visit to wine country? Give the Napa Valley-inspired Napa Grape a spin. Wishing you could afford a trip down to sunny Florida? Pop the top on Siesta Key Lemon and let the citrus scent take you to the sunshine state.

Granted that a shower gel is nowhere near as good as an actual trip to one of these storied destinations, but if you’re stuck at home with no travel prospects in sight, you can at least transport your senses to someplace far away.

No matter where you are heading, be sure to have a safe and happy holiday!

Gettin’ Girly

Moxie Scanty Panty Liners

Last week as I was on my way to a late night movie showing when I received a call from my 11-year-old sister. She was excited and nervous on the phone as she told me her big news: she had just gotten her period. She wasn’t sure what she should know and, as her big sister, she wanted to ask me everything.

Once I had stopped tearing up and answered all of her questions, I had a moment of panic for her. Growing up is hard enough, but it’s always worse on those girls that start to develop first. At 11, most of her other schoolmates are more concerned with what’s on Nickelodeon tonight than what kind of sanitary pads they should be using.

Girls can be cruel, especially to those early bloomers. It only takes one of them to see you with that telltale flat wrapped pouch in your hand before the teasing starts. I remember a few young classmates being reduced to tears by a mean girl’s mocking or an obnoxious boy’s taunting. I definitely don’t want my little sister to go through that kind of torment.

It doesn’t help that the personal products category isn’t exactly what you’d call attractive. I know it’s supposed to be more about performance than looks for this particular aisle in the drugstore, but can’t they look nice AND work well?

Moxie Slenders Panty Liners

Thankfully, a new brand on the market is looking to change that. Moxie, a recent Australian import that’s exclusively available at Duane Reade this month, features uber-girly packaging that’s designed to make you feel a little more glamorous around that time of the month. What I love most about the pantyliners and pads is that not only do they feature pretty pink wraps and cute little bows, but they also come in these ultra-discreet striped metal tins. No more hiding your personal products up your sleeve or in your pocket when you dash to the loo.

They’re great for us big girls who want something a little more sophisticated than an old makeup bag to stash our stuff in or for the little girls who don’t want a pack of pre-pubescent boys to know what they’re carrying in their bags. Girly and discreet, it’s just what my little sis (and I!) need.
