Bath & Body Beauty Tip

Softening rough, dry elbows

Softening rough, dry elbowsDon't go further than your pantry for a solution to those rough leathery elbows. First, cut the toes off a clean pair of cotton tube socks; then smooth a layer of Crisco (or other brand of vegetable shortening) over elbows and pull the socks up to cover. Leave the shortening on for an hour or overnight. This treatment can also be effective on knees, hands, or feet.

tragus_nazareth replied: Wed, 2007-12-12 15:47

Vegetable shortening is an alternative to butter, I believe.

Hi, shortening is the white gloppy stuff used when baking, it's kind of gross. I like to use oil of olay face wash (the stuff with the pebble type things) it works great! My elbow was really dry and while in the shower , no extra mess to clean up.

ch_lovin... wrote: Wed, 2007-12-12 17:23

You probably know shortening as "Crisco" it in the bakin gisle bu the oils and it comes like in sticks.

tanianicole101 wrote: Wed, 2007-12-12 17:45

Crisco is lard. Animal fat. If you put any oil with saturated fat (animal fat) in the fridge it will turn from oil into lard, which is what Crisco is.

And this seems gross to do, but it really really works for dry skin.

Also, another little tip, I live in the midwest and it gets really dry here in the wintertime. For dry skin, a humidifier is good, and an Oatmeal Bath really helps my skin tremendously.

Take a nylon stocking and cut the foot off. Put real oatmeal into the foot (about 1/2 cup to 1 cup) and tie the top part into a knot, and put it in your bath, and slough it on your skin.
You will literally feel your skin stop feeling dry immediately, then after the bath, put on oatmeal moisturizing lotion. My skin feels great and is no longer dry after this. :)

Just MHO

Cricso is not lard, which is animal fat. It is parially hydrogenated cottonseed and soybean oils. Butter will not work the same as it is animal fat. Shortening can be purchased in the baking section of any grocery store.

kiekeyme replied: Thu, 2007-12-27 22:43

you all have fun with you oil , the only smart one here is the shea butter idea.I hate to be sitting or sleeping in your sheets or even tring to get that off of yourself never mind if you get in you hair

addieg21 replied: Wed, 2008-12-24 13:10

i agree because i am definitely not putting that on my skin.

josie8 wrote: Wed, 2007-12-12 18:37

Can i use butter

dmason8 wrote: Wed, 2007-12-12 22:37

Vasoline or petroleum jelly works the same.

bmw42029 replied: Thu, 2007-12-13 00:15

It will work, but also remember it is made from PETROLEUM! I believe I would prefer to use a vegetable product. Olive oil is an effective moisturizer, used for many centuries.

lovelines000 wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 01:23

Rather than vegetable shortening, which I have no idea what it is, I would soo rather to use moisturiser

lovelines000 replied: Thu, 2007-12-13 01:24

I like, so agree with you

ch_lovin... replied: Thu, 2007-12-13 14:18

Oil is a great moisturizer.

lilrobinnest2002 wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 09:19

I haven't ever tried the crisco tip... but I have tried the oatmeal bath before. That really helps calm down dry, itchy skin. I know you can buy the Oatmeal Bath products in any Health & Beauty section of mose grocery stores, corner pharmacy, or Walmart/Target.

azraaa wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 12:56

I wouldn't mess with this I rather use aquadaphor or vaseline am sure it'll work even better

kacieb14 wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 13:34

Anything with mineral oil in it kills the sking underneath your top layer. Try this out and see what I mean. Take a cracker and put it in a small bowl of baby oil (which is just mineral oil and fragrance). Wait 10 minutes and see how hard it is after you take it out. Now put a cracker in water, we all know it will get really soft and fall apart. Now you tell me, wouldn't you rather be putting a lotion or moisturizer on your skin that does not contain mineral oil!!!

clridenhour wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 15:53

Olive oil is much better than vegetable shortening, petroleum or mineral oil. I have been using a product by DHC made from extra virgin olive oil on my face and I get a lot of compliments regarding my skin (at age 41). Regular olive oil works great on the other body parts. And it's all natural.

ch_lovin... replied: Thu, 2007-12-20 13:29

Isn't it really oily?

dlahlouh replied: Sat, 2007-12-22 22:48

does olive oil make acne prone skin break out?

ch_lovin... replied: Mon, 2007-12-24 11:31

I would think so becuase of the oil you put on your skin unless I'm wrong but if you think about it, it does make sense.

slynnpayne replied: Thu, 2007-12-27 14:04

You skin needs oil to stay soft. You should go to Sheseido and look at the Purness line for acne prone skin. DHC's Deep Cleansing Oil is also good because it water soluble.

babycakes2 wrote: Thu, 2007-12-13 17:00

its great

valerine wrote: Fri, 2007-12-14 15:05

Ok. Is it safe, Healthwise,
to put Crisco on your skin???

ch_lovin... replied: Thu, 2007-12-20 13:28

It's just oils, you eat it so I assume it is ok.
