Must-Know Hair Stylist Lingo

comb.gifDo you know what the difference is between a "trim" and a "dusting"? It might save you from having a total breakdown the next time you get your hair cut.

A dusting means that you only want to cut off the dead ends so that you won't notice a difference in your hair length.

A trim implies that you want to take off at least an inch and actually see that your hair is shorter.

Thank you for clarifying up the terminology in regard to the difference between a trim and dusting. There are many other terms that I could use a heads up on. (No pun intended) Such as.....what is the difference between notching, feathering and thinning out? Thank you for all your help.

Great. I'm always asking for a trim and i feel as if my hair's taking ages, to grow back .... so if first you don't succed, I shall dust it all off and try again *

babygirlhc05 wrote: Thu, 2008-05-01 10:02

ok I am a hairstylist. I know the difference between a trim and a dusting some people might not of heard the new terms. Now with feathering notching and thinning. Notchin would be using notching shears used as a thinning method if the hair is very bulky i would notch it out...now if you only want it thinned in certain places you would use thinning shears and feathering is a technique we use when cutting to feather the ends of the hair... we cut out at the ends with our scissors instead of straight across blunt ends?? Does this answer your questions?

spiceitxupp wrote: Sun, 2008-05-04 16:04

I've never heard of dusting - I'm going to add it to my vocabulary.

My God, thank you who-ever-put-this-up! I'm going to let my mom know this. Or maybe I shouldn't. I like my hair short. Forever will 'Trim' be in my vocab. ;)
