While celebrities are infamous for pushing the limits on being skinny (and even skeletal), there’s one thing about them that’s getting noticeably fatter these days: their hairstyles. The standard for sexy hair used to be all in the roots the higher, the better. But celebrities like Ashley Tisdale, Jessica Simpson, and Elle Macpherson are rewriting the rules. “The new trend now is to have major volume through the middle and bottom portions of your hair, but to keep it flatter on top,” says celebrity stylist and NYC salon owner Adrian De Berardinis. It’s about having wide hair, instead of high hair. “This new look is sleeker, more modern, and comes across as more polished,” he says.
To get to the look:
Step 1: On wet hair, apply anti-frizz serum first, then volumizing mousse all over to create tons of body with a smooth finish. Next, blow-dry your hair using a large round brush. Instead of pulling sections up (which gives lift to roots), pull each section outward as you blow-dry.
Step. 2: Once hair is dry, use a large 1.5 to 2 inch wide curling iron to create rolling waves on the bottom half of your hair. Spray each section as you go with a light-hold styling spray and alternate the direction of the curl from the cheekbone down. “We call this look curly but straight in the salon. The gentle curls give lots of volume, but the overall effect is still smooth,” says De Berardinis.
