How To Ace An At-Home Manicure

How To Ace An At-Home ManicureWant to save some cash and paint your nails yourself? Here are all the pro tips you need to nail an at-home manicure:

Step 1: Prep your nails by rubbing them clean with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover. This gets rid of any oils so your polish will stick to your nailbed and last as long as possible.

Step 2: Apply a clear base coat and let it dry for at least a minute so it’s not tacky before applying your nail polish.

Step 3:Slick on two thin coats of a colored nail polish. Each coat should be thin so it dries quickly. Wipe one side of the brush against the top of the bottle to remove the excess lacquer, then paint your nail in three even strokes—first down the center, then down each side. Wait a minute between coats. Extend your second coat slightly over and under the tips of your nails to prevent chips.

Step 4:Finish off with a high-shine topcoat. Wait a full 30 minutes for the polish to dry.

Lmao... Siriously! That's like the simplest thing ever. I've been doing my own nails for as long as I've been wearing nail polish. This artical didn't teach me anything new... I was hoping to learn 'somgthing!'

Oh well...

Yea, I agree with Diana .. this doesn't tell you how to give yourself a manicure .. only how to apply nail polish. If you want healthy looking nails (the purpose of a manicure) I wouldn't suggest putting on any nail polish and I definitely would not use a 'cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover'. That will only make your nails more brittle.

In my opinion, natural is beautiful. Use lemon juice or baking soda to clean and whiten your nails. Buff your nails to smooth them out and make them look all shiny. Then use some very good hand and nail cream or olive oil to moisturize ... You should notice a very nice difference. :)

well if your not going to use the tips that they gave you don't be going around telling people how u would do it because then they might make a mean comment of your suggestions.

thanks pinkpearl, i always prefer to use what nature gives us rather than what a lab makes. by the way, sugar is a great exfoliant for hands or just about anywhere, just bring an airtight container into the shower.

Okay, people, first thing is first you should ALWAYS have aloe lotion or some type of lotion of that sort that really moisterizes. BEFORE you apply ANY polish, you should squirt a tiny amount into palm,a dime sized amount, and rub evenly even around the wrists. Then wait about a minute or until you kow for sure that the lotion has evened in. Then paint your nails whatever color it is that you have picked. Apply after your nails have dried. That makes the paint last longer and keeps hands and nails in good shape.
-Now what I do for my French-tip-manicure, I get a white colored pencil)or whatever color you doing for the tips) and lightly mark around the tip of the nails and the part that I don't paint white, which is above thet tips, I use a light pink, or whatever color you natural nail color is, and shade lightly and fully. I then paint the tips. When done with that part, i take a clear pink, or just clear which ever you perfer, and apply after the tips' color has completely dried for a beautiful natural look. Optional--While the clear coat is still wet, but not too wet, take two small nail gems and put them on the thumbs in the corner (it looks best in corners, either corner works). I have only been doing this for about three months and it totally works! I came up with the idea while i was on vacation, and so i tried it, and been doing it ever since!

For doing a French mani at home, the white part is called the 'smile line' because it should actually be curved not straight across. A straight thick white edge shortens the look of your fingers and nails. Try painting a thin ivory or white V at the tip using two brush strokes -- one from each side of the nail to the center point. Then, with a tiny bit of polish on your brush, gently push the brush up in the center of the V until it smooths out the shape of the curve. Or, follow your natural white line, or exaggerate the curve a little bit to elongate the look of your nail. Finish with the sheer pink or beige over the whole nail.

To make your polish last longer, do not put lotion or aloe on your nails before you polish -- put it on your hands to moisturize. The original tip about using polish remover -- acetone works best -- to remove oils or filing dust is true. Oil, lotion or filing dust will make your polish peel or chip. So once you've done all your filing and cuticle pushing, wipe your nails clean with polish remover. Then use a soft, sticky base coat which works like double sided tape, then 2 coats of polish, then a top coat for shine and protection. Should last at least 4-5 days if not more even on people with thin soft nails.
