Forget pretty pastels and overdone neons. The hottest nail trends this spring are supercharged glitter, pale metallics and plenty of purple.
From Marc Jacobs to Lanvin to Balenciaga, “there was a lot going on with embellishments on the Spring/Summer ’09 runways,” says Ji Baek, celebrity manicurist and founder of Rescue Beauty Lounge. “Glitter, metallics and purple are really huge now. They’re chic and make a definite statement. Just be sure to keep your nails short and rounded so these bold colors don’t look overwhelming.
The New Glitter
There’s a big difference between today’s glitter and yesteryear’s teenybopper glitter. “Look for a polish that is glitter-dense. If the polish looks more like a clear topcoat with pieces of glitter speckled throughout, it’s not dense enough. You want the polish to look like thick, full-on nail bling,” says Baek. She also advises looking for shades that show a contrast of glitter color like green and gold or blue and silver to add intrigue and sophistication.
We like Rescue Beauty Lounge “Look Rich, Be Cheap” and Locavore.
Pale Metallics
If there’s one trend you can always count on to look chic and modern, it’s metallics. This spring, subtle, brushed-metal shades like pewter, pale gold or bronze are popular.
We like Nicole by O.P.I. Positive Energy and CND Iced Cappucino.
Purple Craze
“Purple makeup was all over the runways, but it’s really hard for the average woman to wear purple lipstick or blush. Purple nails are a great way to make a bold statement without looking like a crazy woman,” says Baek.
We like Chanel Vendetta, Lippmann Collection Purple Rain and >Jessica Cosmetics Birds of Paradise.
