Skincare Beauty Tip

When going natural ISN'T a good idea

When going natural ISN'T a good ideaIs natural always best? Not when it comes to your exfoliating cream.

"Natural" exfoliates such as crushed nut shells or fruit pits often have sharp and abrasive edges that can scratch and tear delicate pores.

Instead, opt for a product containing man-made exfoliating beads or spheres that will clear away dead skin cells, without the damage.

Gross..who in the world exfoliates with nut shells or fruit pits??

hnfiwen replied: Thu, 2008-01-10 08:14

mmm, it's really awful! And being allergic to nuts myself, it's annoying just how many products I'm allergic to for that reason. They always make my skin owie anyway. =0(

I think they are referring to facial scrubs like St. Ive's Apricot Scrub which if I'm not mistaken does have some kind of nutshell in it. I use to use it all the time and it actually made my face really soft, glad I don't use it anymore after reading this.

'addicted2binkie' i too used to use St.Ive's Apricot Scrub, and yes it did make my skin feel soft, but after watching 'Women Today' on ITV it had a bit about how St.Ive's Apricot Scrub did have harmful effects on your skin - glad i gave that up!

I went to a skin care professional and she suggests to exfoliate with baking soda. Try it you will be amazed at how soft your face will feel!!

pinkpearl19 replied: Sun, 2008-12-14 19:43

She's right!
The answer to all of life's questions ---> baking soda!! :)

wriggit replied: Sat, 2009-10-10 06:24

Baking soda is also great at teeth whitening!!! Just pop a bit on your toothbrush after brushing normally, every morning and night, and u will be AMAZED!!! Dentists and stuff never tell u this because they make heaps of money, like 500 bucks if u go to them to do it. It's not worth it!!!!

i never knew that! i use apricot scrub and it was great...and a lot cheaper than those man-made ones...i still think i might stick to my usual one though

jjmac wrote: Thu, 2007-07-26 11:23

what other exfoliates out there are good ones to use?

sparkysue replied: Thu, 2007-07-26 12:03

tretinoin cream 0.05% (vitamin A) used every other night will sluff off dead skin and treat any acne you may have. (need a prescription though, but easy enough to get)

vicckkii replied: Wed, 2007-08-15 16:20

cutie_angel_pop replied: Sun, 2007-11-11 20:50

well i know it sounds crazy but i don't buy an exfoliating product i use sugar. it works its wierd but hey if it works

danicu77 wrote: Thu, 2007-07-26 13:55

I've used both synthetic and natural and prefer the natural on my arms, legs, and bum; the synthetic exfolients tended to cause breakouts and inflamed pores on my face. I've rediscovered the wonder of the Buf Puf (sp?) And no need for two-step scrub and face wash. I just use Cetaphil on the puf and my skin has improved. No flaky skin, poors are smaller, and skin is clear. Neutrogena also makes a great Micro dermabrasion puf that has an exfoliating surface on one side and smooth surface on the other. Great to use about 1x per week.

I used St. Ive's Apricot scrub but now I have found Arbonne it is wonderful my skin is soft and I don't have any acne like I use to but you have to get it through a consultant which I am. Very good stuff and I use all Arbonne products and I don't have any problems any more. thanks to Arbonne products

mainsail replied: Fri, 2007-07-27 05:54

I'll agree. Arbonne is good stuff! I use the thermal exfoliating mask about once week and it keeps my skin looking very fresh and soft. I believe it does have some of the natural nut shells - the key is you don't use it every day and you don;t rub really hard.

Cheers!

Mainsail

I must agree, the Arbonne products are wonderful, they're the only thing that works to get rid of my acne, and the thermal fusion mask is AMAZING!!!

If natural scrubs are bad for the skin then what are the synthetic ones made of?surely these chemicals, which lets face it, were never meant to be used in skincare and more as garage floor cleaners, are also not good to use?
take petroleum jelly for instance(synthetic),extremely dangerous to use as it's carcinogenic(cancer causing)known as a 'humectant'which draws the body's own natural moisture to the surface of the skin to make it soft and then in turn dries it out leading you to believe that you need to use more of it.most of these synthetic products contain chemicals and are more damaging to the skin than anything else.they would excellerate the ageing process in skin more than improve it. I use Burt's Bees lemon cleanser which has a very mild non abrasive exfoliant in it and I find it great.I cleanse with warm water and then remove with a face cloth.afterwards i remove any excess with Burt's bee's tomato toner.(this is excellant for acne prone skin)

verve replied: Mon, 2007-08-13 17:23

The chemicals used in facial products are cosmetic-grade, meaning they're developed and tested to be safe for skin. They aren't necessarily the same as chemicals used to clean other surfaces. The amount used in a product and the other ingredients it's combined with make a big difference.

jessicap wrote: Sat, 2007-07-28 07:54

oh and by the way these are almost a hundred percent natural.

jessicap wrote: Sat, 2007-07-28 08:00

Also I believe the more natural the better.there is too much cancer in the world for chemicals not to play a huge role in this.

I think this tip is mostly speaking of the exfoliants that are more physical than chemical. Neutrogena and I think Lancome make ones with tiny little balls mixed in with the soap and they are very gentle on the skin, they don't dissolve and just rub your skin. I guess all this modern day stuff replaces a wash cloth. The buff puff is just like a nice little piece of Scotch Brite, like we do dishes with. I think those fluffy things for showering work just as well, those net/tule things, you know?

gcmbam replied: Sat, 2007-08-11 11:12

are you talk about a lufa when you say net tule things

kathymccown replied: Sat, 2007-08-11 14:22

It is the same principal as a loofah, but is that net kind of stuff that they have at the stores all wadded up in a ball that you use in the shower. The come in different colors. Not as abrasive as a loofah.

kris10_b replied: Sat, 2007-08-18 09:19

i know those! you can get them at walmart for 50 cents. i always thought that they were kinda exfoliating.

verve wrote: Mon, 2007-08-13 17:16

From what I've read, all physical exfoliants are rough on skin. Both crushed up nut shells and crushed up plastic can do more harm than good unless they're used very gently. That why chemical exfoliants like AHAs and salicylic acid are so popular.
