Summer Hair Survival Tips

While summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy the fabulous weather, all that sun and fun can be brutal on your strands. Chlorine, sand, saltwater and, of course, those pesky UV rays can lead to everything from green-tinged hair color to fried and frazzled texture. We caught up with celebrity colorist Kim Vo--whose clients include Kate Hudson and Britney Spears--to get the scoop on how you can keep hair healthy during summer's hottest days. Check out his easy, DIY recipes and tips to make your strands look shiny, strong and chic all summer long.

A Chic And Changeable Hairstyle
Prior to hitting the pool or beach, shampoo and condition your hair with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. When washing out the conditioner, make sure to leave some of it in your hair to help hair soak in moisture while you soak up the sun. Create a loose fishtail side braid, like Alessandra Ambrosio's here. Once the sun goes down, take out your braid and finger comb your hair to create loose, sultry waves that will look perfect for dinner, drinks or wherever the night may take you.


Enhance Shine
Lack of moisture and too much sun exposure can leave your locks looking fried. Infuse them with healthy hydration and shine by using coconut milk. It has moisture and protein-building ingredients that are great for hydrating parched locks. Combine equal parts coconut milk (found at your local grocery store) with a moisturizing conditioner. Apply to wet hair and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse. Your hair will have loads of shine and will look and feel instantly healthier!

A Chlorine Green-Removing Recipe
Hanging in the pool is a fun way to cool off on a hot day, but all that harsh chlorine can turn blonde locks an unflattering green. Prevent your strands from taking on a Swamp Thing tint by applying Kim Vo Moisturizing Masque to damp hair and then covering your head with a swim cap. Damage already done? Ketchup removes chlorine green from blonde hair. Apply organic ketchup to wet hair, let sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse it out and shampoo and condition as normal. It's an affordable, organic, simple solution for reducing chlorine in the hair.
