Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful ultraviolet radiation--UVA and UVB light--that ravage skin, damage its DNA, provoke cancer, and accelerate wrinkles. UVA has been dubbed the aging ray because, over time, the dermis damage it does produces wrinkles and pigment changes. UVB, the burning ray, triggers inflammation and dilates blood vessels--sunburn.
There's a lot of conflicting information out there about sunscreen and how you should use it. Here are my essential tips and guidelines for how to protect yourself from the sun's damaging rays this summer.

the general rule is that you shuold use at least a 30 SPF sunscreen. If you want a really good sunscreen, you shuold look under the ingredients for sunscreens that have zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or oxybenzone. The sunscreen shuold also protect against UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays cause sunburn and UVA rays penetrate the skin on a deeper level. Both rays can cause cancer. As for the SPF, for a person that would be burned after 10 minutes in the sun unprotected, they would be able to stay in the sun for 250 minutes without being burned if they applied a sunscreen with 25 SPF. The reccomended time between sunscreen applications in 2-3 hours.Hope this helps!

You must select a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB. In particular, choose a sunscreen that includes a good level (around 4% to 5% or more) of zinc oxide (also called micronized zinc), or titanium dioxide, or Parsol 1789 (also called avobenzone) among the list of active ingredients. In the same time, determine the activity you will be doing for the day and apply a product that will meet the task, e.g. water activities mean you should use a waterproof sunscreen. The water-resistant products must be reapplied every 40 minutes and waterproof ones every 80 minutes.
