Red lips come around every season, but always with a new twist. Here are two strikingly bold red lips from Fall/Winter 2009 Fashion Week.

At the Cynthia Steffe Fall 2009 fashion show, makeup artist Christian McCullough for MAC created an "uptown downtown" brick red lip look. "It's uptown that the whole look is very done-up, but it's downtown because the edges are soft, which makes it cool and modern," he explains. He suggests using a very moisturizing brick red lipstick first straight from the tube, then use a matching lip liner afterwards to clean up the shape. "Using lip liner after lipstick makes the borders look soft and less harsh he explains."

Blood red lips were the focal point of the look makeup artist James Kaliardos for MAC created for the Luca Luca Fall 2009 fashion show. "There's a Marlene Dietrich quality to the look. The dark blood red lips is very glamorous and feminine," he says. He started the look by lining and filling in lips with MAC Currant Lip Pencil, a burgundy hue. "This will give the lipstick finish a deeper look," he explains. Then he layered on MAC Crimson Lip Mix, a brighter true red.
