Color For Kids

Family Reunion

Me rocking my best Bret Michaels hair
at the 80's birthday bash.

For the longest time I have thought it is crazy to color a kid's hair. Over the years I have seen mom's bringing their tween-aged daughters in to get some highlights to make them more blond or had them ask about putting "sun-in" through their child's hair at the beach. My response has always been the same - don't color your kids' hair, they have their whole life to worry about their hair color. Honestly, I also was a little judgmental in thinking the parent was sending a message to the kid that they aren't pretty enough the way they look and they need to change it.

Now, I'm wondering if I was harsh in my judgments. If you saw my post a while back about my nephew Brady and his highlights, you know I have colored a kid's hair - and he LOVES it, so do all of his friends. Well, I just returned from Minnesota for a family visit (and an 80's-themed, camping, 40th birthday party - yes it was SUPER FUN!) and my niece Sydney told me she wanted to color her hair. She is seven. She asked for "red stripes." After asking her mom (my sister) for approval, we decided to go ahead and do it.

I think what I learned is that playing with hair color (at least for my niece and nephew) isn't about changing them or sending a message about what will make them better looking, it is all about letting them be creative and expressive. It was a blast!!! I love the results and so do they. Take a look at the video and LMK what you think!

I am so loving your Brett Michaels look! But, seriously, could Syndey be ANY cuter? I love how she's like, "I don't want, purple, blue or yellow!" Too adorable.

im 12. i really want to dye my hair black...but my hair is dry, what should i do?

To get rid of the dryness in your hair all you have to do is put a defrizzer in your hair two or three times daily.

Hi Hannah!

Wow! Black huh? That will definitely be a dramatic statement!!! My first recommendation is to talk to a parent/guardian before you color your hair - once you get the go-ahead from them there are a couple things to consider. If your hair is medium to dark brown now, you can use a demi permanent (Natural Instincts has some cool black shades like Midnight Neutral Black, Ebony Mocha and Blackberry Burgundy Black in addition to Natural Black). A demi permanent is a great option because it gently fades over 26-28 shampoos and it has no ammonia which leaves the hair soft and shiny. If your hair is light brown or any shade of blond, you would have to use permanent hair color to get a true black shade. Before you use permanent hair color remember IT'S PERMANENT!!! You will have that black color until you grow it out, cut it off or spend big $'s to have a pro change it for you - big commitment.

A couple other tips/opinions.... Black can often look very hard or witchy. It can also look dull and matte - so unless you take the time to style your hair every time you shampoo (blow-dry, flat iron, curling iron, etc.) it can actually look more dry and damaged after you color it than it did before. You may want to consider a darkest brown shade. Most of the time people can't really tell the difference between darkest brown and black - it is just a little bit softer and a little bit more natural looking.

I'm excited to hear about your results! LMK! Jason

Thanks for this blog entry. I was googling around for kids hair dye and found your post. I have a 4 year old daughter, and yes she is young. She really wants purple or pink hair. Of course I don't want to do her whole head, and I don't want to fry her brian. But seeing your tips has really helped me out and I hope that I can convince my daughter that I could just do deep red stripes in her hair too. Thanks. Great blog.
