Humidity-Proof Hairstyles

Finding a hairstyle that holds up to summer's hot and humid temperatures doesn't have to be a struggle. In fact, three of the season's hottest trends -- waves, braids and ponytails -- not only look fabulous, they're also insanely practical. The secret behind their wearability is all in the texture: a messy, slightly undone finish allows you to be less precise with the style and drastically reduces your chances of a total tress meltdown. Here's how to do them:

Beachy Waves

"There's something very organic about natural waves that is very sexy," says Tresemmé celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak, whose clients include Zooey Deschanel and Halle Berry. Not only do they look great, they're also super-easy to achieve. If you already have a natural wave, apply an anti-frizz cream to towel-dried hair to define texture and reduce frizz, then scrunch your hair and twist sections away from your face. Her pick: Tresemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème. If you have straight hair, spritz a spray gel on wet hair to create texture, then scrunch all over and finger-tousle as you dry it.

Braids & Twists

"Braids are a great way to open up the face, tame thick tresses or give texture to fine hair. It's also a great option when you are having a bad hair day," says Herbal Essences celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan, whose celeb clients include Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. Start with dry hair that has a wavy texture, which will hold the braid. Take small sections of hair at your part or hairline, then braid to the ends. Secure with a clear elastic and lightly spritz the braid with a spray gel. His pick: Herbal Essences Set Me Up Spray Gel. Loosely tuck the bottom of the braid under other pieces of hair so that the ends aren't visible.

Pretty Ponytails

Turn a boring ponytail into a fun and flirty style by adding in some waves and twists. Start with dry, wavy hair. Gather strands up loosely into a ponytail, leaving a few front pieces loose. Secure the ponytail with an elastic, then loosely twist the front strands. Pin them back, then set the style with a light hold, flexible hairspray. We like Oribe Superfine Hair Spray.

These are some great tips but what about those of us who have curly hair and need some help with styling our crazy hair in the humid summer?

Everyones else hair looks great but lMiley Cyrus looks so ugly

what if you have shorter almost shoulder length layered hair. What styles are humidity proof for us especially when it isn't long enough to tie up into something half decent and you have relatively wavy hair that you like to straighten. Would love some styles and hints for this.

these are great but what if you have short hair, or chin length hair, or hair that is curly in back and straight in the front, then what do you do?

These styles are great if you have long hair, but what about short, limp hair? I can think humidity and my hair goes flat. I end up looking like Moe of the Three Stooges.

i cant stand it when my hair is frizzy when i scrunch it! so when it is, then i just put in into a messy side pony or something, and it works out pretty good. but i also dont use any anti- frizz cream ethierr.. does it look good because my hair isnt thick?

Any suggestions for curly hair? The styles you show are for smooth straight hair.

Let's get real. None of this pictures are done on a beach or even as a quick doo. Fuzzy hair that poufs out into the old Cousin It style will NOT be tamed by any of your suggestions. I've tried them all. I've hat the pompom ponytails (pompom radius 8 inches), the fuzzy afro/halo the pops up once hair starts to dry and then there is the full afro. Hats work as long as you never take them off. Blonde hair does not suit aftos! The only hope is a big braid and LOTS of hair clips. Then of course your hair still isn't dry by bed time but at least you don't look like an electrostatic experiment from the science centre.

it would help with this Arkansas humidity!!!

Those are GREAT tips i need to try them some time!!!!!

hello,
I have a huge problem with split ends and frizz ...what are two great products i could use without damaging my hair even more than it is already ? My hair is also very hard to work with in the summer. What is a graet and sexy look for summer-on-the-go ?

thank you,
tamara

These ideas are great if you are young and have long hair, but in case you didn't know it there are millions of baby-boomers who don't have a single magazine or other source to go to for "over 50" hairstyles and ideas. Just a thought............

I love Miley Cyrus hair but i have naturally straight hair so what do i do if i want it curly and i don't want to use a curling iron ?

I jus ♥ the beach wavess.

Very nice....good advice and dooable. Thank you!

My hair is so frizzy they were using a ruler on my head to check the humidity levels in high school. Thanks for the ideas for turning my frizz into an asset.

I live in an area that is normally not humid and muggy. But this year has been different because of all the moisture we have received this year. Please give me suggestions on how to take care of my very short hair so that it doesn't fall during the day.

Right On and I have short limp hair too!! What do we do?

okay. if you have short hair like shoulder length you probably shouldn't have humidity problems. unless your bangs are in your face. in which case you should probably use a head band or a puff (take the middle of your bangs twist the end ,push it forward and clip down the middle of the twist.).
i have hair that goes the falls to below my chest. i got it thinned out a lot about 2 months ago and it is already thick as it was. what i usually do is straighten it then put my hair up, leave my bangs out, and but a stretchy head band behind my bangs so if i need it i can use it. sometimes i leave my hair down and it will be controlled but it usually isn't so. hope i help(:

love your suggestions, but i have course hair (a bit longer than chin length - color treated) very thick - i use morroccan oil (expense) which I bought at my salon. makes hair healthy and shiny. but in the midwest humidity it still frizzes. shorter hair is harder to deal with making those styles you talk about - i use scrunch spray and leave it just as it is and don't worry about it after that. everyone comments on my nice "perm"! i actually was afraid to wear it this way for a long time, but now natural is the way i go. i try to stay away from the blow dryer when i can and let air dry and then put product in it. i use headbands and scrunchies too - that tames it a bit, but face it, if you have course hair, nothing much works to smooth it out, so just let it be natural. you might be surprised at the compliments you do get. thanks.

if you have short hair you could still do the twists. i think it will look better on people with shorter hair. also you could do a french braid.

lets be real...god gave you the hair you have YOUR LUCKY .
You guys sit hear and wine about how you cant manige the volume and the frizz in your hair...some girls dont have hair to manage, some have hair that is ALWAYS greasy, or just hangs there with no volume or curl and you cant do a thing with it no matter what products you use or try. and then some people dont even have hair

I have naturally thick, fine, curly hair which intimidates hairdressers to comb it out after shampooing and conditioning. I'm use to my hair so I always bring my conditoners and comb out my own hair. Every hairdresser asks if my curls are natural or permed. They are shocked when they find out their mine and stay curly when my hair it is to the middle of my back. No hairdresser has ever recommeded that my hair be cut shorter than my shoulder blades. I've been told I hair for four (4) people and no one has ever seen my hair type. It leaves me with few options but because I take care of my hair I get a lot compliments. I have health problems and at times I wish I could cut it in a short style but as said, no hairdresser recommends or will do a short haircut. If anyone can identify with my hair type and has some recommendations for other styles that would be functional and attractive, please give me your advice.
