Gleaming shades of green, blue, and even red offer a new approach to metallic eyes. Makeup artist Chrisanne Davis uses Urban Decay Liquid liner in 'Gash' (a pearly rose) to deliver "a sharp line of color that looks reflective and beautiful." (page 56)
Chanel's Initiale line contain vitamins and plant-derived antioxidants that aim to strengthen skin cells and prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin. "Like sunscreen, this product focuses on prevention rather than repair," says dermatologist Jeannette Graf. (page 60)
Actress Sarah Wynter's winter hotlist includes Giorgio Armani Skin Retouch Concealer. "I use this to brighten my eye area and make me look refreshed." (page 151)
Curl Power? Unlike old curved wands, most of which were too flimsy to curl, Lancome Courbe Virtuose's curved brush has irregularly spaced spiral bristles of different lengths that grip the lashes and sweep them up into a 100-degree bend. A new, long-lasting latex formula sets them in place. (page 166)
While training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the U.S. team assessed seven new waterproof mascaras for Allure. One that held up, was Chanel Inimitable Multi-Dimensionnel Waterproof Mascara, with carnuaba and rice wax to lengthen and thicken. "My lashes didn't wilt, and the color didn't smudge after hours in the pool, says swimmer Christine Jones. (page 168)
While training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the U.S. team assessed seven new waterproof mascaras for Allure. One that held up, was The Body Shop Waterproof Mascara, with conditioners to prevent drying, survived a twist spin, rocket split, and back pike. "It required a few layers to achieve a nice look, but after an hour of swimming, the mascara didn't run," says swimmer Janet Culp. "In fact, my lashes looked just as good after practice as before. Promises plumpness and definition. Long bristles run down the center, with shorter, tightly packed ones on either side. The shorter bristles - used first - coat the lashes; on the second swipe, turn the brush so the long bristles separate lashes. "While the concept is clever and, when used correctly, does work, having to angle the brush in two specific directions seems too difficult," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson. What Allure says: "We tried rolling it while applying and the effect was the same - volume without any goopy buildup." (page 168)
Promises length and sleekness. The flexible wand is covered with short rubber bristles that deposit lightweight polymers right at the root, coating each lash evenly, with triangle-shaped bristles to remove excess formula and prevent caking. "This brush makes lashes look even longer and fuller because the angled wipers - on a flexible wand - swipe away extra mascara while pushing it up to the very tip of the lash to extend it," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson. What Allure says: "The brush coated all of our lashes - even the tiny ones - without clumping or flaking. The waitress at dinner even asked if we were wearing fake lashes." (page 168)
