Beat The Heat!

I’ve been a busy “bee” these past few weeks! After my styling session with the lovely Jadyn Maria, I hopped a plane to head to a Burt’s Bees advertising shoot in Miami. My plane landed at 1:30 in the morning and I was so exhausted! I managed to get about three hours of sleep and then had to be to the shoot at 7:00 a.m. The fashion world is so glamorous sometimes.

The campaign was for the brand’s new Natural Acne Solutions line and I had three models to work with on the two-day shoot. Everything was done outside and it was so hot!

Because of the heat, I really had to work hard to tame the frizzies and fight the humidity so that the girls’ hair looked great. In that type of weather I always choose to create waves — humidity makes hair swell and frizz, so if you straighten your hair you are fighting a losing battle.

My first model had extra-long hair, so I used Tame It Shine Lotion to calm her frizz and then used a medium barreled curling iron to create soft, beachy waves. Beautiful Hold Hairspray kept her waves in place.

Burt's Bees Natural Acne Solutions Cleanser

This cleanser from the new
Burt’s Bees acne line is fab!

Model number two had short, straight hair. I had wanted to keep her hair straight but the heat just wasn’t cooperating, so I gave her a soft wave as well. I side-parted her hair then used Hair Sheet Styling to calm flyaways and protect her hair from the sun. It’s very important if you are out in the sun to use a product with UV protection on you hair — if you don’t you could end up with faded color and dry, straw-like strands.

The last model had straight, shoulder-length hair, so I gave her hair a slight wave and put it up in a ponytail to make it look casual and chic.

Here’s a top secret insider trick: mixing products together will almost always give you a better effect than layering them. I combined Hair Sheet Styling with Fix It Gel to help seal the cuticle and tame flyaways. This is great for fine hair because you technically are only applying product once; when you layer products it can weigh hair down and won’t be as effective at conquering frizz.

Styling A Star On The Rise

Jadyn Maria

In my line of work, I get to work with all sorts of famous women, from those at the very top of their game, like It Girl Anne Hathaway, to legends like the marvelous Jessica Lange.

It’s not often that I get to work with someone who’s on the brink of their stardom though. That’s why I was super-excited to work with the gorgeous Jadyn Maria, a singer about to launch her sure-to-be illustrious career. Jadyn is a 24-year-old pop singer who is good friends with Katy Perry and has producer Ne-Yo working on her debut album. We did the album cover shoot recently and I was there to style Jadyn’s hair.

The girl is hip and connected and she has a great personality, so I didn’t want to make her look like every other blonde pop tart out there right now. I put my Gabrielle Extensions in at the back of her head to make her long dark hair look even more luscious. Then I center-parted her hair and used a large barrel curling iron to create soft waves. I finished up by spraying Beautiful Hold Hairspray to create a movable and sexy finish.

We had a lot of fun on the set trying out different styles and jamming to songs by Flo Rida and Britney Spears. I’m loving Jadyn’s debut single Good Girls Like Bad Boys, you guys should definitely check it out. The shoot lasted for 10 hours and then I had to immediately hop a plan and fly to Miami for a Burt’s Bees campaign. More on that next week!

Resort Chic at Issa

I love doing backstage work for fashion shows, but everything is always so hectic and fast-paced. So I was really surprised when I showed up to work the Issa Resort 2010 presentation and found how calm and relaxed everyone was.

There’s a whole different vibe there, a kind of casualness to it because when you think of Resort, you think about being on vacation somewhere luxurious like St. Tropez or Miami. Everything is calm and relaxed and very go-with-the-flow because everyone involved is thinking about being somewhere gorgeous and totally relaxing. It definitely helped make me feel calm!

I wanted the hair to look like the models had did it themselves and I didn’t want to detract from all the gorgeous garments. There were some fantastic prints, elaborate necklines and sophisticated details in the line. I wanted the hair to be a compliment to the collection, not take away from it, so I decided to do a simple, classic bun with a subtle, summery texture.

I started off by using Hair Sheet Styling on dry hair to create a slightly textured, yet still shiny finish. I center-parted the hair, then gathered it all back and sprayed it with Beautiful Hold Hairspray to create a flexible hold.

To create the DIY bun, I pulled the hair into a low ponytail, securing it with a hair bungee and then turned the hair onto itself to make it into a low chignon. The end result was a casually chic style that really brought out the details of the clothes. I love the way the bun looks with all of those beautiful dresses — it makes me want to go on vacation!

Lake Bell at the CFDA’s

Lake Bell at the 2009 CFDA's

Monday night was the CFDA’s — the fashion world’s version of the Oscars. I was so excited to work with my girl Lake Bell for this event. She was decked out in head-to-toe Louis Vuitton and was the guest of the amazing designer Marc Jacobs.

Lake’s filming a movie with Meryl Streep that requires her hair to be really long, so I had a lot to work with! We decided to do a half-up/half-down hairstyle that was kind of ethereal and sexy at the same time. It’s a little bit more of an exaggerated look, with lots of volume — I wanted it to look very deliberate and styled as opposed to looking like she just threw her hair up by herself.

To create it, I sprayed Build It Blow Drying Agent on her dry hair to create volume at the scalp. I then blew her naturally thick hair out using a medium-sized round brush and pulled everything off her face. I sprayed Tame It Shine Lotion all throughout her hair to create texture, then I backcombed the entire head to create even more volume.

I pulled all of her hair back, except for a few front pieces that were left loose, and secured it with a bobby pin, then added a huge barrette in the back. To keep everything in place I sprayed Beautiful Hold Hairspray throughout.

Doesn’t she look beautiful? I love this look on her.

Secret Weapon: Dry Shampoo

Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo

I recently appeared on the Mike & Juliet show to talk about dry shampoos. It was my first time on the show and I had a really great experience, although I had to be at the studio at 5:30 in the morning. Ug!

Once I got on set and started chatting with Mike and Juliet I had a blast. It was very casual, fun and free-spirited — not at all like a formal interview! I was on the show to talk about why dry shampoos are such a great styling tool.

If you need to create texture or get rid of excess oils, dry shampoos are the way to go. They’re also great if you need to refresh your hair but don’t have time to shower. They contain talc, which is a powder that soaks up oil, creating texture and a matte finish.

baby powder

To get the most out of these powders, apply them directly to your scalp. This is where you probably have more oiliness so it’s best to concentrate on that area. If you’re new to dry shampoos, start at nape of the neck and work your way to the front –that way if you apply too much it will be at the back of the head and you won’t see it too much.

Dry shampoos range from the very inexpensive drugstore brands to the super expensive luxury brands. Baby powder is a great, inexpensive option– it contains talc, just like the the pricey powders, but it costs a fraction of the price.

Anne Hathaway’s Mod Bob at the Obie’s

May was a jam-packed month for me — between all the cover shoots and red carpet appearances, I barely had a chance to catch my breath! That’s okay though, because I know I’m so fortunate to be busy right now and I also get to work with some of the most amazing women on the planet.

Case in point, the gorge Anne Hathaway. I had the pleasure of working with her again for a red carpet appearance at the 54th annual Obie Awards. The Obie’s are awards given by the Village Voice newspaper to honor Off-Broadway and Off-Off-Broadway productions. Anne was there to present, so we wanted her to really shine on stage.

She had chosen to wear a beautiful green Proenza Schouler dress that had a very retro, Sixties shape to it. I played up that retro vibe by creating a sort of modern interpretation of the sexy Sixties bob.

I wanted her hair to have volume from the hairline to the crown of the hair because that would modernize her look. If we kept it volumized all over, her hairstyle would be a literal retro interpretation and would make her dress look more like a costume than a fashion statement.

I sprayed Build It Blow Drying Agent on the roots of wet hair, then used Fix It Gel throughout her whole head. I then created an off-center part and blew out her hair using a round brush. Super easy and super chic!

Debra Messing Does The Twist

I had the pleasure of working with my gorge gal Debra Messing for her appearance at the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival dinner.

She wore an adorable, kind of retro white dress, so I decided to do a look that had a little bit of Chanel glamour mixed in with a little girl sophisticate. The end result was a volumized French Twist.

To create the look I used Hair Sheet Styling on wet hair and then blew out her hair with a medium round brush. I then divided her hair into two sections: the top of the head and then everything on the sides. I pulled the sides back into the twist, then backcombed the top section and pinned the ends into the twist in the back.

The most important thing for this hairstyle is the position of the twist. It needed to be higher, rather than lower, otherwise it would be too sleek and severe. When I twisted her hair back, I made sure that it was pulled at the center of head. This ensured that the fullness was at the top of the head, which helped elongate her face and gave her that chic little girl look.

I used bobby pins and hair pins to secure the style, added a simple and sophisticated headband to pull the look together and sprayed the whole thing with Beautiful Hold Hairspray to hold it in place.

Doing Town & Country With Jessica Lange

Jessica Lange April 27

Photo: © Bennett Raglin/WireImage.com

It’s cover mania right now! I styled the phenomenal Jessica Lange for the May cover of Town & Country magazine. May has been a great month for me and it feels so great to have been working so much.

Jessica likes her hair to be on the bigger side — she is a legend after all and there’s nothing legends love more than full hair. She has fine hair so I sprayed Build It Blow Drying Agent at the scalp and blew her hair dry with a round brush to get the volume. If you really want to go big, tip your head over and backbrush your hair to create tons of lift.

I set her soft, full waves with Beautiful Hold Hairspray to keep everything in place and to make it even fuller. The hairspray step is really important because it keeps the hair from drooping and flattening out.

Remember to keep your head up and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Cover Model Chic with Zoe Saldana

I love doing red carpet styling but I think magazine photo shoots are tons of fun too. I recently styled my girl Zoe Saldana for the May 2009 issue of Women’s Health magazine, on stands now.

I went for a loose, cover girl chic look that had lots of fullness and sexy waves. I added extensions for length and then used a one and a half inch curling iron to create natural texture and beautiful waves. After I curled her hair I used Hair Sheet Styling and Tame It Shine Lotion to smooth flyaways and add shine.

Zoe and I had a ball on set. If you look on page 128 you can see us having a great time. I loved working with her again and am so grateful that I get to work with such beautiful women, traveling the globe and helping them reveal their inner beauty.

A Fashion Show With A Cause

final look operation smile benefit

The final look
Photo: Nathan Bush

Recently I had an amazing opportunity to style the hair of models for the Jr. Smile Collection Event, a charity fashion show to benefit Operation Smile.

While I had definitely seen the images of children in Third World countries who have these severe facial deformations, I’ll admit I didn’t know as much as I could have about Operation Smile. When I had this opportunity to work with them I thought it would be a great way to enlighten myself on what the doctors and volunteers do.

The models were motivated Manhattan teens that worked to help raise awareness and funds for the charity. They were wearing beautiful clothes donated by top designers like Carmen Marc Valvo, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg and Vera Wang. Most of the dresses were very short and sexy and the heels were MAJOR. I decided to go for a naturally (age-appropriate!) sexy hairstyle of a center part with soft waves.

Ted Gibson - Operation Smile

We brought all the girls to the salon and washed their hair with Daily Cleanse and Daily Nourish. Since we did the hair a few hours before the show, we needed it to last all day. So I used Hair Sheet Styling and Fix It Gel on wet hair to give the style hold and lasting power.

I then created a center part and used a 1 inch barrel curling iron throughout the ends to create a nice, soft texture and wave that looked sexy but not too sexy.

The event was great, the girls looked fabulous and we all helped to raise awareness for a really fantastic organization. Mission accomplished!

Debra Messing’s Tribeca Glam

I worked with the fabulous Debra Messing all last week for the Tribeca Film Festival and let me tell you we had so much fun! For the premiere of Woody Allen’s new film, “Whatever Works,” we decided to go for classic Hollywood glamour.

Usually when I work with an actress, I don’t go in with a clear idea of what I want to do. I want to be flexible. It all depends on the clothes, the accessories, the jewelry — the overall look that the actress is going for. With Debra, she has impeccable taste. She’s a fashion girl and that night she was wearing a gorge siren red dress by Donna Karan.

With a strong dress like this, it wouldn’t look as good if I had put Debra’s hair up, it would look too undone. I thought soft, sexy waves would look very glamorous and complement the dress. I put a center part in her hair, then used the Nalu Waver to create the classic waves. I used Tame It Shine Lotion to add that delicious shine and get rid of flyaways.

Doesn’t she look stunning?

Styling a Legend: Jessica Lange

Jessica Lang

I have been working with a legend! What makes an actress a legend? I think if you are and actor and have won an Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe or SAG, then you’ve done something really great for yourself and deserve legendary status.

I had the opportunity to work with living legend Jessica Lange, not once, but twice this month! I did her hair for the cover of Town and Country’s May issue that is out right now and I just did her hair for the premiere of Grey Gardens. She is spectacular and I enjoyed spending time with her.

To create her very volumized, curly hairstyle, I sprayed Build It Blow Drying Agent on damp hair at the roots. Then I used Hairsheet Styling to fill the hair cuticle and curled the ends of her hair into those alluring tendrils. To hold it all in place I used L’Oréal Infinium 3 Strong Hold Hairspray. Doesn’t she look stunning?

My Morocco Trip With Marion Cotillard

Ouarzazat

I hope that you had the chance to see the Oscar winning performance of Marion Cotillard in the most amazing movie of 2008, La Vie En Rose. I was in Morocco for 3 days working with Marion on a fashion shoot that was beyond my imagination. I have never experienced any place like Ouarzazat before It was desert, palm trees, lush vegetation and beautiful weather!!!!!

Marion came to the shoot in a beautiful long sweater, jeans and hair in a bun. Such a movie star!!

We created a very soft, sexy flowing hairstyle with tons of bounce. I used Hairsheet Styling and Build It Blow-Drying Spray to give volume and control because we were shooting outside. I’ll follow up with a picture when the story is published.

It was gorge!

We always think about charity and giving back, don’t we? Debra Messing is no different than you!! I had the pleasure of styling her hair recently for WET Love Benefit. She looked amazing in a sexy dress. So gorg!!!

We wanted her hair to look big, brushed-back and voluminous and to evoke a sexy modern sensibility. I used tons of Build It Blow Drying Agent at the root to create sexy, designed hair, then blew it out while brushing her hair backwards to get that swept-back shape. Check it out!

The Hair Extensions Are Here!

Who wouldn’t want to have glamorous full amazing hair? I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t. That’s why I created a new line of hair extensions. They are so easy to use. Clip them in when you ant. Clip them out when you don’t. You can be red carpet ready in less than 10 seconds and you will never have to worry about another bad hair day!!

I just debuted my hair extensions on QVC this past weekend. I have one thing to say: SOLD OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad about the response. I presented 5 colors and showed how to put them in.

Julia: warm Caramel medium brown
Angelina: Chocolate dark brown
Gabrielle: darkest espresso brown
Jennifer: light blondish brown ash
Reese: golden blonde

You can see the demonstration here!

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Tip: Backcomb the area where you are going to attach the extensions. This will help the clips stay put.

I had the pleasure of styling Anne‘s hair for an event the other night. It was her first appearance out since the Oscars and she looked AMAZING, as you can see.

When you are styling your hair it is important to always think about the blow dry. It is the single most important thing that will make your hair look the best when you are finished with your style. Take one inch sections to insure that you have enough tension and are not using too much hair. It’s important to control the hair at all times. I love YS Park brushes and they always seem to give me enough tension and grip on the hair when I am blow drying.

Wow, what can I say Rashida Jones!!!

I had the pleasure of doing her hair for the Martha Stewart show, as well as for a photo shoot for an international publication called Velvet. If you don’t know who she is, she’s the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton. She is also on the new TV show with Amy Poehler called Parks and Recreation. It looks SO FUNNY!!! Also she is in the new movie, I Love You Man, staring opposite Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. She said she had so much fun shooting it.

Tip… When using velrco rollers it is better to start of with you hair 100% dry to insure you get the maximum volume and shape from them.

Creating 40′s Waves for Zoe Saldana

I had the pleasure of working with one of the most beautiful woman in the world for Vanity Fair Magazine. Her name you ask…Zoe Saldana. WOW! What a great time we had.

I created this gorgeous 10940′s retro wavy hairstyle for Zoe using the the Nalu Waver (I’ve talked about this before, I’m obsessed). To make this look really modern, I didn’t want to weight the hair down with products so the waves would have a light and airy feeling. I used Build It Blowdrying Agent and Beautiful Hold Hairspray.

We shot in Harlem at Lenox Lounge and the story focused on her and about 15 hot black male models. The clothes were styled by Jessica Diehl and photographed by the famous Michael Roberts, who is a regular contributor to Vanity Fair. I can’t wait for you to see it and will let you know when it hits newsstands!

P.S. Remember to always keep your hands washed as much as possible to avoid getting sick during the winter. If you cant wash you hands on a regular basis use JAO hand refresher.
