Great Hair On A Budget

Ladies, I know that when you turn on the evening news from the top of the hour to the bottom of the hour, all they are talking about is the economy. A lot of times, when finances are short, the first thing to go is your beauty maintenance. I know that things can be tough but it is important to make yourself feel beautiful.

You don’t have to skimp on the things that make you feel more beautiful, you just have to be smarter about how you utilize them. Instead of following the latest trends, focus on keeping up the consistency and maintenance of your hair. Following the latest “It” trend can leave you with a hair cut you either hate, or that becomes dated quickly, meaning you end up back at the salon sooner than usual.

Keeping your hair consistent means not downgrading on things like a good shampoo and conditioner. This will affect the condition of your hair down the road and unhealthy hair has to be cut more often than healthy hair. So investing in a good shampoo and conditioner is actually more cost-efficient in the long run.

Another money saving tip is that when you do go to the salon, get your hair cut shorter than you normally would. Your hair will take longer to grow back, so instead of going to the salon every four weeks, you now go every six or seven weeks.

At home, be sure to use a deep treatment or hot oil mask to prevent split ends. Concentrate on the ends of your hair, because they need it the most. If you keep your ends healthy and moisturized, you won’t get as many split ends, so you won’t need to trim your hair as often.

Saving money is important, but so is looking beautiful. It’s okay to spend money on yourself because it keeps you feeling good about yourself and understanding that you are worth it.

Beating Back the Winter Blues

Winter got you down?

Winter got you down?

Its already February and I know your hair, skin, scalp, hands and mind are having a moment. Trust me, I have some things that will make your heart sing.

Help calm a dry scalp and repair dry, brittle hair with Goodnite Replenish Hair Serum. Moisturize your scalp and gently cleanse the hair with Aveda Scalp Remedy Dandruff Solution.

For dry, chapped hands try Surgeon’s Skin Secret Beeswax Moisturizer. Another way to prevent dry skin during the barren winter months is with L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Face Cream.

For your mental health, try to get out of the house. Take a long weekend out of town and go somewhere you’ve never been. Join a class on something you’ve always wanted to learn. Novelty and challenges have been shown to contribute to happiness. If you can’t go on a winter trip then you have to read The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It will help your mind relax during the cabin fever months by learning to be present in the moment and let go of anxiety about your past mistakes and future uncertainties.

Remember to always see the best in yourself. And if you go and treat yourself to a haircut and a massage it will do wonders for you.

WOW!! I just came back from my hometown of Killeen, Texas. Elvis Presley was stationed there in the 50′s; Anne Margaret was there to entertain the troops; and Jessica Simpson set up camp there too for some of her movies. Fort Hood is the LARGEST army base in the free world.

Before Locks of Love

I was there a few weeks ago to do an event for Locks of Love. It is an organization that accepts human hair to make wigs for kids with cancer who have lost their hair from chemotherapy treatments. It is an AMAZING organization that helps kids cope with losing their hair.

After Locks of Love

At the event, we cut 82 ponytails and raised over $2,000!!! HOW AMAZING IS THAT??? I am so proud. A friend of mine owns Ashley Furniture in Killeen and that’s where we decided to have the event. There were 8 hairdressers including Zan Ray of Zan Ray Salon, Lisa Lethco and Cassidy Quick from the Texas Hair Company, Julie Cole and Valerie McPheron from Highlights Hair Salon, and Garmil Land of Shelly’s Design Studio. We had a great time!

Feels so wonderful to be able to give back and make a difference.

Staying Healthy One Day at a Time!

My darlings, it is so important to stay fit, healthy, and feeling good about yourself. I try to do this by meditating, reading, and writing for 20 minutes a day. This gives me a chance to remember who I am and why I am here on this planet. This is time for myself and is essential for the well being of my mind, body and soul. Try it out.

To meditate, just sit in a private place, cross your legs and close your eyes. Try to calm your thoughts and clear your mind of everything. After sitting for a few minutes, you will notice your breath. Slow your breathing down so that your body will become more relaxed and feel different. Welcome to BLISS!!!

I also exercise at least 3 times a week and see my acupuncturist, Noah, every week. I spend an hour with him. He sticks those funny needles in my head, ears, feet, legs, and hands. Sometimes it hurts a little, but only for a split second. I think the pain is more in my head, but that isn’t surprising since I am so worked up by the time I get there. I look forward to this type of relaxation because I need it all the time.

I also rub Goodnite Replenishing Hair Repair Serum on my scalp and hair before I go to bed. It protects my scalp from dandruff, especially this time of year. This is an excellent way to keep your hair and scalp healthy.

My last tip: drink green tea instead of coffee. It is full of antioxidants and tastes great.

And remember, Beauty Is Individual.
