How To Curl Your Hair With A Flat Iron

Our friends at StyleCaster.com share how you can get four completely different looks by learning just one simple curling technique.

How To Curl Your Hair With a Flat Iron

For
most women, the flat iron is their number one frenemy. While it
straightens your hair and tames unruly or frizzy curls, a flat iron can
fry your ends. However, with the proper straightening (and
curling) technique, you and your flat iron can finally resolve your
back and forth, love/hate relationship.

Hair stylist Kelsy Osterman of Cutler Salon
demonstrates how to curl your hair with your flat iron, thus maximizing
its utility without damaging your hair. Although at first the curling
technique can be a little tricky, once you get the hang of it, you can
make little changes to the setting technique and use different product
cocktails to help diversify your look.

When purchasing a new
flat iron, Osterman recommends that you, “never pick the largest flat
iron. While you may think that it will save you time, the larger flat
iron won’t let you get close enough to the root of your hair. A 1-inch
flat iron is a good size for everyone.” Also, when questioning whether
to save some money on a flat iron, Osterman warns: “Ceramic plates are
the best because the plate gets hotter than metal plates. While it may
seem counterintuitive to use hotter plates, hotter plates mean you only
have to go over the hair once instead of multiple times.”

Step 1:image

Start with clean wet hair. Put a small amount of Redken Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk
into your palm and comb it through your hair before blow drying. Don’t
fixate too much on getting your hair perfectly blown out; stop drying
the hair when about 90 percent of the moisture is out.

Step 2:image

Set
the hair in barrel curls, using the fewest number of sections possible
to make the set quick and easy. Kelsy Osterman recommends dividing the
hair into five sections: one for the “bang area” and then four vertical
sections around the head. If you have bangs, only do the four vertical
sections. Secure the set with bobby pins.

Step 3:image

Sleep on your set hair. In the morning, take the pins out and shake hair out.

Step 4:image

To
begin curling, start with the flat iron at the base of the head near
the scalp. Take the loose hair, and wrap the section once around the
flat iron plates as you simultaneously turn the flat iron away from the
head. Pull the iron down the hair. We recommend covering the hair with
a little Cutler Specialist Protectant Treatment Spray to create a protective barrier between your hair and the heat of the iron.

Curling
your hair with a flat iron instead of a curling iron gives you more
versatility with looks that range from smoothly flat to bouncy and
voluminous. Making minor changes to the products you style your hair
with will diversify your look even though you’re using the same flat
iron curling technique. Regardless of the look you’re trying to
achieve, the curling technique is the same. Here are four different
hair style ideas you can achieve at home with only minor changes to the
products you use!

Hair Style Idea #1

image

For
a curlier, bouncier hair style, maximize the hair’s volume by folding
the hair back into the curl and secure with a bobby pin. Let the hair
cool.

Hair Style Idea #2:

image

For a smoother, softer, and more controlled curl, put some of the  Cutler Specialist Fly-Away Control Stick in the palm of your hand and mix with Redken Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk. Finger comb the product through the hair.

Hair Style Idea #3:

image

For an edgier, textured hair style, spray Redken Fabricate 03 Heat-Active Texturizer directly onto your hair and scrunch or blow dry the hair with a diffuser.

Hair Style Idea #4:

image

For a firm but silky hold, put Redken Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk into your palm and spray Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray directly into the palm of your hand. Touch up stubborn flyaways by flattening them with the Outshine and hairspray.

All About Lash Extensions!

Contributed by: Senior Beauty Editor Amber Katz

closed-eye-photo.JPG

Amber’s new lash extensions

I recently experienced a life-changing beauty service, friends. Lash extensions have freed me from the shackles of beauty Alcatraz. How? I can now go about my day with zero eye makeup, shaving nearly five minutes off my morning routine. These babies make liner, shadow and mascara totally obsolete. Here’s how the process of getting the extensions goes.

The entire service took about 45 minutes. My lash technician May showed me a bunch of lash lengths to choose from. I chose the dramatic-but-not-drag-queen length of 12. Naturally, I was scared May would glue my eyelids together. She didn’t, of course. I found it a bit odd that she used my forehead as a surface to hold the lashes (I think. Of course, I couldn’t see WHAT was resting on my head). She also used tape to tape up my lids to create a more taut surface. Each lash was applied individually with glue and I opened my eyes later to a dramatic fringe of inky, long lashes.

At JJ Permanent Makeup, where I got these cil-outions of delight, the first full-set appointment costs $90. If you go back after two weeks, a refill will set you back $45. If you go back after three weeks, it’s $70. Wait longer than that, and you’re back up to $90 status. It’s a no-frills salon, I’m already a week and a half deep into my first set and they’re holding up remarkably well. I’ve already made my appointment for a refill.

JJ Permanent Makeup is located at 316 Fifth Avenue 2nd floor. Call 212-244-2919 to make an appointment.

Kate Hudson’s Sleek Hairstyle At The Nine Premiere

So, Kate Hudson, not that your breezy beachy mane isn’t totes cute, but we’re so glad you locked up a bit with smooth, bouncy waves at the New York premiere of the hotly-anticipated movie, Nine. It was a special night and Kate rose to the occasion with a more formal, polished look. The more-extreme-than-usual side part and shoulder length are a welcome departure from her typical BoHo waves.

Style chameleon Rachel McAdams stunned in her sexy side braid hairstyle at the London premiere of Sherlock Holmes.

We first noticed this sexy look inspired by Brooke Shields’ Blue Lagoon character grace the runway at the Alexander Wang Spring 2010 show. Redken Creative Consultant Guido Palau, created the look for the show.

I love how easy this look is to replicate at home. All you need is a long mane, but it can be wavy, straight or even pretty curly. Best of all? It takes minutes to do a simple pony and braid before securing the ends with a holder.

What do you think? Will you be replicating the Malibu Barbie Side Braid hairstyle at home?

How To Add Shimmer Under The Eye For Holiday Parties

Want to gleam like Reese Witherspoon? Our friends at StyleCaster tell you how to add a little extra sparkle to get you noticed under the mistletoe

How To Add Shimmer Under The Eye For Holiday Parties

A new trend that we’ve been seeing on the runways and red carpets is to
line the under side of the eye with a light, shimmery eyeshadow or
liner. It tends to brighten up the eye and wake up the face. The
shimmer trend will also be a great way to step up your regular look for
the holidays. You can make it work for day with a subtle color such as
white (it will have you looking that much more like Blake Lively),
but if you’d like a more dramatic evening effect, you can use a little<
more of a vibrant color such as gold or silver (or be daring and try
the bright blues and purples we saw on the Spring 2010 runways)!

Karen Ali of Pamela Taylor’s Makeup Academy and Studio Team came in and showed us the steps to applying shimmer under your eye.

Step 1:image

Dip your fine-tip brush into water and then into the shimmer shadow color you’d like to use.

Step 2:image

Starting in the corner of the eye on the lower lid, lightly drag
your brush along your bottom lash line until about halfway across your
eye.

Step 3:image

Take a wet cotton swab and gently rub it along the bottom line to
blend the shimmer into the under eye area. This will also help to even
out the shimmer. Keep blending with the dry end of the cotton swab
until the shimmer is properly blended into the skin.

Step 4:image

Finish your look with some mascara and soak in the compliments at all of the holiday parties you attend!

Drew Barrymore’s New Textured Bob

drew-compliation.JPG

We love Drew Barrymore at Daily Makeover HQ for her vivacious variation when it comes to hairstyles. This does-it-all Hollywood big shot boasted a bevy of wild looks in 2009, but we’re happy that she’s ending with a totally cute, textured versatile bob. Let’s take a quick look at the evolution of Drew’s mane since the beginning of the year, ‘kay?

First, there was her Marilyn moment (some critics may refer to it as a fauxment) at the Golden Globes in January. This look is all about exaggerated volume combined with a perky length.

In April, Drew channeled famed French bombshell Brigitte Bardot at the Los Angeles premiere of Grey Gardens with her side part and volume at the crown. Sexily tousled bedheady strands complete the “voulez-vous” look.

To promote her flick Whip It, Drew drummed up some controversy with her two-toned bob. It’s certainly edgy (a look Drew typically does well), but the effect was much less ombre as it was blonde-hair-dipped-in-shoe-polish. We do, however, love the cut, piece-y texture and color (well, the top three-quarters of it).

Lastly, Drew ends the year on a follicular high note with her honey-blonde bob that has a softly-tousled texture. The sunny shade compliments her skin tone and the cut emphasizes her bone structure. It’s a ‘do that a real gal could rock easily. We love this look!

Can we all agree that Zoe Saldana’s new softly waved long bob hairstyle is it and then some?

Zoe stunned with her glossily sleek shoulder-length hair at the world premiere of Avatar in London on December 10. We loved her superlong locks as well, but we’re smitten with this modern and flirty look with a side part and subtle layers.

What do you think? Is Zoe Saldana proof that a gal can still maintain her sultry diva status even with a cropped coif? Or do you prefer the sci-fi starlet with a long, flowing mane?

Nicole Richie, the quintessential BoHo babe, recently traded in her sandy blonde mane for a rich and sophisticated chocolate brown shade.

I have to say, I love the new color. Her original blonde locks looked generic and a bit too “done.” The darker color really brings out her beautiful brown eyes gives her skin a natural glow. Isn’t it amazing what a simple color change can do? Sometimes that’s all it takes to refresh your look.

Back in the day, when Nicole was hanging out with Paris Hilton and living The Simple Life, she wasn’t someone who I ever thought I would look to for style inspiration. But now, thanks to her new focus on family and toned down style, I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I’m loving her beauty choices.I could totally see myself wearing that color and the bangs look super cute.

What do you think of Nicole’s new ‘do? It is a direct hit or a total miss?

Celebrity Hair Heist: Ashlee Simpson-Wentz

Celebrity_Hair_Heist_Black.gif

Recently Ashlee Simpson-Wentz made her debut performance this month in the Broadway hit Chicago. Embodying the lead part as a murderess Roxie Hart, Ashlee traded in her famous fiery red hair color for an inky blacker-than-black hair hue. Offstage, her new hairstyle is a total “black rocker chick look,” says celebrity hair colorist Rita Hazan. “It’s really dark, but she’s young enough to pull it off,” says Hazan.

Ashlee-Simpson Wentz hair color makeover.jpg I agree Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is young–and edgy–enough to pull off this severe look, but I’d prefer to see her with a warmer, friendlier brunette hair color–the kind baby Bronx won’t mistake as the Wicked Witch of the West and have a freak out. I couldn’t help but put her in the Makeover Studio and try on a few looks.

celebrity virtual makeover ashlee simpson wears anne hathaways hair.jpg
Here Ashlee Simpson is wearing Anne Hathaway‘s warm medium brown bob. This brunette hue isn’t too far off from her previous red hair (which I really liked), but still has enough moxie to play Roxie.

Celebrity Virtual Makeover Ashlee Simpson with Terri Seymours hair.jpg
A slightly darker look is Terri Seymour‘s chocolate brown hair color. In fact, I don’t think anyone can go wrong with this flattering neutral brown hair color.

Ashlee Simpson-Wentz wears Kim Kardashians black hairstyle.jpg
And the darkest I think she should go is Kim Kardashian‘s raven black locks. Thanks to some major shine and some warm undertones, this black hair color looks more sexy than severe.

Eau de Vulcan?

Contributed by: Senior Beauty Editor Amber Katz

It’s not exactly sexy, but I’m into sci-fi almost as much as I’m into beauty. It serves as a yin to my girly yang, right? One of my favorite posts in my other Internet home of Beauty Blogging Junkie is this interview I did with Star Trek’s lead makeup artist Mindy Hall.

So when I heard about this new perfume, created to compliment the franchise’s cologne offerings, I thought WHY did they wait so long?

c628_star_trek_cologne.jpg

The Pon Farr Perfume ($30) boasts top notes of citrus, blackcurrant, lotus blossom, and water lily, with base notes from sandalwood, peach, and mulberry. Pon Farr, for the non-Trekkie, is a physical state that occurs when a male or female Vulcan goes into heat every seven years, becoming violent. Pon farr eventually causes them to die if they don’t mate with someone with whom they’re emphatically bonded. Slightly macabre, slightly provocative–but certainly made for some excellent story lines in the original series.

What do you think? Will you be getting in touch with your inner Vulcan? Or will you be able to live long and prosper without it?

How to Style Your Hair at Night For an Easier Morning

Our friends at StyleCaster break down the details on how to style your hair and night and awaken to beauteous waves–not bedhead.

style-caster1.jpg

Photo: Andrew Katzowitz

Since the weather has suddenly taken a turn for the brisk, and warm nights inside with tea and hot chocolate and season two of Mad Men have become much more inviting than the outdoors, Iesha Carter of Platinum Salon shared with us a little trick of hers. With just tissues, hair spray, and a curling iron, she shows us how to do our hair the night before (in front of the TV of course) and wake up with gorgeous, soft curls.

style-caster 2.jpg

Step 1: During the night, start with dry hair that is either clean or dirty. Begin by curling your hair with a curling iron the way you want it to look in the morning. Iesha recommends that you curl the hair underneath itself in a basic curl, and section the hair into five big sections, which will give the hair more volume.

style-caster 3.jpg

Step 2: Once you finish the individual curl, don’t pull the curl out. Instead, slide the curling iron barrel out of the curl so the curl itself stays intact and tightly coiled.

style-caster 4.jpg

Step 3: Spray the tissue with hairspray, which will set the curl, and unlike a roller, using a hairsprayed tissue will allow the hairspray to release gradually into the curl and securely set the hair (Iesha recommends Redken Forceful 23).

style-caster 5.jpg

Step 4: Twirl the tissue in your hand, and slide it through the curl. Criss-cross the ends of the tissue on top of the curl and then bring the ends of the tissue back down underneath the curl. For added volume, pull the tissue tighter and slide the curl up towards the root.

style-caster 6.jpg

Step 5: Tie the ends of the tissue in a knot.

style-caster 7.jpg

Step 6: In the morning, unwind the tissue and finger comb out the curls.

2009 American Music Awards Top Five Looks

Contributed by: Senior Beauty Editor Amber Katz

Did you catch the AMAs last night? Music mavens rarely disappoint when it comes to edgy hair and makeup concepts. Here, our top five favorite beauty looks of the evening.

Shakira

Shakira stuns in sweeping bangs giving way to side-parted Rapunzel waves. Her makeup is soft and natural: the songbird went for a neutral palette of shadows paired with a nude glossy lip. Statement earrings complete her look.

Fergie

Fergie’s center part and long, voluminous waves yield a polished bombshell effect when paired with her subtly smoked-out lavender eye shadow and nude lip combo. Just one look and you’ll get a feeling that “Tonight’s gonna be a good night” for Ferg.

Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood skewed far more low key than her typical lots-of-hair moments, but she still looks prettily polished with her loose waves pinned on one side with a barrette. Her pale violet eye shadow makes her hazel eyes pop, while her lips are softly glossed with a nudish peach hue. Fresh and subtly appealing, no?

nicole-kidman-american-music-awards-2009.jpg

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman

Nicole’s super-sleek side-parted locks are a refreshing alternative to the ubiquitous Hollywood waves we’re used to seeing on the red carpet. Though it’s simple to do this ‘do at home, its asymmetry achieved by simply tucking one side behind an ear provides an air of extra drama. Fresh, subtle eye makeup and a barely there pink lip complete her look.

rihanna-american-music-awards-2009.jpg

Rihanna
Photo: © Michael/Getty Images

Rihanna

No stranger to makeup with an edge, Rihanna rocked a dramatic ruddy winged eye and a fringe of lush lashes paired with a bit of pink shadow, while keeping the rest of her face neutral. Red liner is not something everyone can pull off, but I think Rihanna did it with aplomb. Her funky ‘do is voluminous, but its smoothness keeps it from being over the top. Both Rihanna and Jennifer Lopez went for a similar bondage theme in their choice of outfits.

Hayden Panettiere Gets Bangs

Heroes star Hayden Panettiere debuted a new look recently with freshly cropped bangs at The Whaleman Foundation Benefit.

Bangs can be a flattering hair accoutrement, but in this instance, I think sweeping bangs would better compliment her features. Sweeping bangs slim a wide nose and balance out a square jawline.

What do you think of Hayden’s new look? And if you miss the old Hayden, you can always try on her sans bangs ‘do in the Virtual Makeover Studio.
