Multitasking Makeup That Does Double Duty

s1405158-main-LheroWe all live such crazy busy lives, and most of us seem to be looking for shortcuts in every department. That is precisely why you need to cut out the extra products and tools in your beauty arsenal to make life faster and easier. There are many miraculous two-in-one products on the market today, and those are the ones to grab to keep things quick and simple when getting ready.

When it comes to your skin, getting a gorgeous, protected complexion in a rush can be tricky, so grab a CC cream to get the most efficient flawless face fast. It Cosmetics Anti-Aging Full Coverage CC Cream ($34.68, qvc.com) is my go-to product for protection against the harsh sun, and it also offers the nicest coverage without much blending. With an SPF of 50 and natural-looking, seamless coverage, it’s the perfect multi-tasker in the morning.

Get a glow with the LORAC Tantalizer Highlighter And Matte Bronzer Duo ($32, sephora.com). Sweep the highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones and then apply the bronzer on your temples, along the sides of the face and under your cheeks for a beachy vibe. Tag team your cheeks and lips with Revlon Baby Stick ($9, revlon.com) in Tahitian, Pink Passion or Sunset, which are the perfect brights for summer to flush your cheeks and give a pop to your lips. After applying your CC cream, just dab the stick onto cheeks for a healthy sheer flush and then swipe across lips for a natural hint of sheer juicy goodness.

If you’re a lip chick and need a bigger boost, try Josie Maran’s Argan Slimline Lipstick Plus Gloss ($25, sephora.com) in Pink Peony, a double ended lip duo that has your lip color on one end and your gloss topper on the other. This is a great day-to-night product as you can gloss by day and double up with the lipstick by night. If you are feeling super jazzy, then try the Sephora Collection Glitter Eyeliner And Mascara combo ($13, sephora.com) in Bewitched Black. This dual applicator brush allows you to bedazzle lashes with a hint of black glitter and the fine tip allows you to draw the glittery greatness along the upper lash line too.

Beachy Body Moisturizers

girl at beachThe only thing I like better than going to the beach is to smell like the beach—that way I feel like I’m always carrying it with me. When it comes to keeping the skin on my body soft in the hotter months, I stick with a few go-to moisturizers that always give off a scent of the summer.

It’s important to keep your skin soft and supple when it’s hot outside and to restore some of the moisture that can be lost due to self-tanners, saltwater, chlorine and even dry air conditioners. We are also showing off a lot more skin, so keeping the glow going is essential to looking sexy in your best summer dress.

My all-time favorite moisturizer is the Pure Coconut Oil by Ligne St. Barth. I have used this for years and always rub it into my skin while I’m still wet and just out of the shower. It leaves a light, fresh scent of coconut and makes me dream of far away exotic locations, plus the amazing sheen it leaves behind makes my body look nice and glowy. Just be careful not to throw on a silk dress on top of this oil (which can leave a stain)—I tend to apply it when wearing cotton.

If I am wearing silk, I slather on Korres Guava Body Butter, which is a rich formula that sinks into the skin without leaving a greasy residue and smells tropically divine. You almost want to eat it. Yummy!

A great moisturizer to smooth on after the sun is Skin Trip Coconut Mountain Ocean Moisturizer, which can be found at most health food stores. This light formula with aloe and pure coconut oil is made in small batches ensuring its high quality and freshness.

Now, if you don’t want to smell like the beach but still want all the benefits of the ocean, try La Mer The Body Lotion, which is packed with rich sea algae that will nourish your skin with the sea’s secret bounty.

What’s your favorite scented moisturizer to slather on this summer?

Homemade Summer Skin Soothers

This summer I had the fortunate pleasure of sharing a beach house with my good friend Soa Davies, owner of Salt Hospitality. She is a food/restaurant consultant and an amazing chef in her own right, so we definitely ate like queens! We decided to pool our resources to address things like sunburns, surfboard scrapes, cold sores, chapped lips and all other kinds of nasties that popped up over the summer and create homemade, food-based remedies for our skin. Here are some of our favorite creations:

Bad Sunburns
A cool bath with oatmeal, baking soda and a sprinkling of fresh mint will soothe angry red skin and leave you feeling cool and fresh.

Scabs
A surfboard mishap left my chin scraped and scabbed one weekend, and with a BBQ coming up, I had to heal it quickly. Soa whipped up a paste blending shredded fresh cucumber, whole fat yogurt, olive oil and a dollop of aloe vera for a quick-fix heal that eliminated the scab in two days.

Cold Sores
A nasty cold sore on the lip is no match for a crazy mix of milk, aloe, crushed Lysine tablets and oatmeal. In fact, the sore never got bigger then a freckle!

Chapped Skin
After a few deep sea fishing trips, wind, salt water and heat left my lips chapped and dry, so a blend of olive oil, beeswax, honey, vitamin E oil (squeezed from a capsule), and a chunk of my favorite red lipstick made the perfect rose tinted lip balm. We put this mixture in little tins and played with various organic fragrant oils and lip colors for some lip-tastic fun.

Will you be trying any of these recipes?

French Summer Obsession

Every once in a while I revisit a favorite product line from overseas to rediscover how amazing it is and consider how it could fit into my lifestyle. That is how it went recently with the plant-based line of skincare and makeup from France called Nuxe Paris. I have loved this line for many years and discovered it on a trip to Paris in my 20s.

My top summer picks from the line work so well with the heat and humidity because of their lightweight, yet luxurious formulas. The 24 Hr Creme Fraiche Energizing Moisturizing Cream ($44.50, Beauty.com) keeps my skin hydrated after a long day at the beach, restoring my thirsty skin with hydrating nutrients.

The Ultra-Nourishing Lip Balm ($19, B-glowing.com) with honey and precious oils is for dry or chapped lips and feels like silky butter, so I keep this on my nightstand and apply before bed each night.

Now for the fun beach-y products in the line…There is the Multi-Purpose Care Multi-Usage Compact Bronzing Powder ($39, Ariva.com). It contains vitamins E and ceramide for healthy skin. The micronized pearl pigments give skin a sun-kissed glow. I use this on my face, décolleté, shoulders and arms during the day, as it’s really sheer when applied with a big fluffy powder brush.

For a glorious sunset shimmer on the body, which looks amazingly sexy on a hot summer night, smooth on the Multi-Usage Dry Oil Golden Shimmer ($41, Dermstore.com). With six luscious oils and vitamin E, it will give an epic glow to the skin and then kick it up a hot notch with the gold sparkle it contains. I also like to lightly smoothe the excess oil onto my hair and dry ends to condition it after exposing my strands to too much chlorine or salt water.

Jelly Jar Beauty

When it comes to makeup, the two most common formulas are creams and powders. Now it seems the new hot texture of the moment is jelly. This texture in makeup is spongey and cool to the touch. Not only does it smooth onto the skin easily, but it dries to a long-wearing powdery finish.

For eyes that are glitzy glam, try the metallic shades from Jill Stuart’s Jelly Eye Color line ($36.99, Facial-shop.com) or go for one from the Estee Lauder Gelee Powder Eyeshadow collection ($24, shop.Nordstrom.com). To apply these sparkling moist colors, simply dab on a shade across the lids with your ring finger and pair with black mascara for eyes that dazzle. This style of shadow applies like a cream, wears like a powder and is super simple to blend.

Cheeks will look dewy and fresh with Maybelline’s Dream Bouncy Blush ($7.99, Maybelline.com) dabbed on the apples. This fun pillowy soft blush adds a natural, sheer wash of color to the face, so use your pointer and middle finger to swirl on the flush in a flash. Clarins Instant Smooth Crystal Lip Balm ($24.50, Clarinsusa.com) offers up gel-textured soothing moisture in fun summer shades that will add a hot hint of tint to the lips and give some major plumping action at the same time. I like to throw these into my cooler at the beach for a refreshing feeling when applied.

A line of handmade cosmetics called Lush has created a fun Shower Jelly ($10.95, Lushusa.com) that is made from seaweed and can even be frozen. I love the Sweetie Pie Cherry-Coconut Skin Softening Jelly ($5.95, Lushusa.com), which slips and slides over the skin conditioning it and leaving a deliciously edible scent. So get jiggy with jelly this summer and give them a go!

Nudist Colony

Since summer began it’s been non-stop color, color, color, but what if we want to get naked? I’m talking about nude makeup, of course, and it’s actually a very chic l
Try a wash of shimmering vanilla on your peepers, like Stila’s Kitten Eyeshadow ($18, Sephora.com), if you’re fair. For darker skin, use a peachy hue like Jezebel. Pair this sweep of nakedness with jet-black mascara on top and bottom lashes, so it contrasts with the nude and defines the eyes well.ook when the skin is looking sun-kissed (from a self tanner, of course). So how to wear nudes without looking washed out, you ask? It’s easy! You just need to choose modern formulas with a kick of shimmer and a hint of color.

On cheeks, start with a bronzer by sweeping it in a C formation, starting at the temples, working along the sides of the face and ending under the cheekbones. My go-to is Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Sunglow Powder Bronzer in Summer ($12.95, Drugstore.com), and I use a big fluffy powder brush to apply it. Next, apply a swirl of blush right on the apples of the cheeks only. Fair and medium skin tones look great in peach colors and dark skin needs to go for an orangey coral.

On lips, you never want to choose formulas that are too opaque, because it can make you look dated and dead. Opt for shimmery sheer nudes with a hint of pink or peach, like the Nars Velvet Gloss Stick in Buenos Aires ($24, Narscosmetics.com), which is a long-wearing chubby pencil, or try a gloss like Lorac Lips With Benefits in Mark ($18, Sephora.com). A few of my favorite drugstore glosses for lips are the Neutrogena Moisture Shine Lip Gloss in Healthy Peach 500 ($8.99, Drugstoe.com) or the L’Oreal Colour Riche LeGloss in Nude Illusion ($3.99, Ulta.com).

Beat The Steamy Heat

The weather is hot right now, and we’re all a bit of a sweaty mess, but for those with oil-prone skin, summer can be particularly disastrous. It is possible to beat the steamy heat and look fresh all day long. The key is in using the right products in the right places to control oil and shine and keep makeup in place.

First apply an oil-free moisturizer that contains sunscreen and allow a few minutes for it to really sink in to your skin. I like Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer SPF 35 ($9.99, Ulta.com) for an inexpensive way to stay hydrated and protected, not greasy. Next apply a mattifying gel to the skin, including the eyelids, to help control any oil slicks that might show up in the heat. I’m currently loving the OC Eight Mattifying Gel ($36.90, Dermstore.com), and I suggest not only applying it on the face but also under breasts and down the cleavage for extra sweat-control.

To cover up imperfections, use a waterproof foundation like Makeup Forever Face & Body Foundation ($40, Sephora.com) and dust on a light and sheer powder to set the makeup. I only use Mac Blot Powder ($23, Maccosmetics.com) as it stays fresh on the skin all day and never adds a cakey layer. Use blotting papers throughout the day, like Clean & Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($5.49, Drugstore.com), to absorb excess shine. I wrap mine around a sponge and dab my face to have better control.

Lastly, apply waterproof eyeliner and mascara and stay away from cream eye shadow and blush. They will just slide around on the skin. Use sheer powders instead, which will stay put and not crease. So no sweaty worries, my hot lovelies! It’s really about layering the right formulas so everything stays in place.

Try It: Pre-Teen Goodness

It’s never too early to start a good skincare regime, and for pre-teens, it might be really confusing on where to even begin. Enter Willa, a new skin care company designed for young girls and full of amazing products that every lovely maiden needs.

The line was created by a young beauty named Willa who just couldn’t seem to find natural products to help clean, protect and moisturize her skin in a healthy way. This adorable line is paraben-free, non- animal tested, free of sulfates, DEA and all the other nasties out there. In the collection you will be able to find gentle cleansing products for young girls to keep their skin fresh and clean. The moisturizers, shimmer body lotion, face mask and sunscreens will help hydrate and protect a delicate young complexion, and the acne-fighting Take Action pen ($10.50, Willaskincare.com) can stop breakouts in a flash.

The glosses are sheer, shimmery and light, containing vitamin E for healthy, happy lips, and they each come with a little lobster claw hook to attach to whatever keychain, phone or purse you may be carrying. The Smile Butter ($7.50, Willaskincare.com) comes in three tropical flavors and is just plain addictive, and The Sleep Over Bag ($14, Willaskincare.com) will fit all your goodies so you can look fresh wherever you are.

Cheap Summer Thrills

womanindrugstore.jpg (HP Detail Image)

Each new season we all tend to get super excited about the hot of-the-moment trends in makeup, but we are often left wasting a ton of money on colors and products that simply do not work. The best way to play with fresh trends is to buy all this hot stuff at a drugstore. No need to spend $30 on a shocking pink lipstick that you wore once or drop $28 dollars on that electric blue eyeliner you saw in Cosmo but made you look like a Cindy Lauper throwback to the 80s with this great tip.

Take a cheap trip to the drugstore with your “It List” in hand and start filling up your basket with inexpensive versions of what is trendy now. Some of my favorites for eyes, cheeks, lips and nails are all under $5, so you can rock the runway in your real life and not break the bank.

1. For eyes this season try NYX Retractable Eyeliner in Turquoise Blue or Aqua Green ($4.50, NYXcosmetics.com).

2. Cheeks look quite rosy and romantic this season when dusted with e.l.f. Studio Blush in Pink Passion ($3, Eyeslipsface.com), and at such a low price, it would be a crime not to try it.

3. Lips look super sexy in glosses that say summertime like Rimmel Moisture Renew Cream Lipgloss With SPF 15 ($6.15, Drugstore.com) in colors like Red Action, Pink Spa or Rose Cocoon.

4. On nails, use fun bright polish as a summertime accessory, like Milani Neon Nail Lacquer ($4.99, Milanicosmetics.com) in Awesome Orange, Rad Purple, Fresh Teal, Dude Blue and Pink Rocks. They will keep you on point with the trends and your accountant.

The Best Multi-Tasking Lipsticks

lipstickgirl.jpg (Slideshow)

When it comes to enhancing our lips, we have so many products to consider. There are lipsticks, liners, glosses, stains, balms and plumpers. My, oh my, what is a girl to do? Well I am over them all! My latest obsession is all about a stick that can multitask in different combinations. I’m listing my top picks and what each one does to make life easier, while keeping my lips luscious.

1. Nars Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil ($24, Narscosmetics.com)
This product is my total fave, and I swear by its moist but long-wearing color. It has a subtle shine; not too glossy, yet the color doesn’t budge through a power dinner.

2. Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm ($16, Sephora.com)
Next on my hit list is this buttery smooth balm, which leaves a hint of shine and lovely light color.

3. Urban Decay Super-Saturated High Gloss Lip Color ($19, Sephora.com)
This color is creamy and sparkly and smoothes around lips like a liner, and then glides on to fill in the lips with rich shades of love.

4. Buxom Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Stick ($18, Sephora.com)
This is a great 3-in-1 product that acts like a liner, a lipstick and plumps up your pout at the same time.

5. Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain ($24, Sephora.com)
It might be gloss-free, but the color stays true, is non-drying and the peppermint flavor is refreshing in the heat of the summer.

So take it easy, and go for a stick that will wind up saving you time and money.

Slimming Secrets Using Self-Tanner

womantanning.jpg (Slideshow)

Bikini weather is here, and if you have been a good girl and been exercising regularly and eating clean, you are ready for it. Now if you have been a bad girl and let your bod slide a little, don’t worry. You are not alone, and I have a few body slimming secrets for you using nothing but good old self-tanner. My tricks will make you look like you have been on point, even if you have not seen the inside of a gym in forever!

First off, you want to find a great self-tanner that is easy to apply like St. Tropez Self Tanning Bronzing Lotion ($30, Sephora.com). Now lay out your tools on your bathroom counter that includes a moist washcloth, a few non-latex sponges, Q-Tips, a cup of white sugar, and a good hand soap. Now jump in the shower and prep yourself by giving your body a good exfoliation using white sugar, not a body scrub product. Body scrubs often contain skin conditioning oils that will limit the self tanner from fully absorbing into the skin, while white sugar will buff your body and leave no residue.

Towel off and smooth on the self tanner all over, starting at the neck and working your way down to the feet. After you have completely blended the self-tanner on, scrub your hands with soap and white sugar, and then grab the moist washcloth and buff it over elbows, knees, tops of hands and feet. This will eliminate streaky buildup of tan on rougher skin areas.

Now it’s tip time. To best apply self-tanner to the face, use a non-latex sponge and blend the self-tanner on like you would foundation. This will allow for a precise application. Pick up a clean Q-Tip and gently roll it under the eyes to absorb some of the tanner so you will have a lighter effect under the eyes, helping with dark circles. Now let the self-tanner dry completely, so the slimming tricks can begin.

Grab a pair of high heels and put them on. Squeeze some self tanner onto a clean non-latex sponge and gently trace the muscle indentation along your legs that stand out when in stilettos. This will create a more contoured look, giving the illusion of well-toned legs. Now stand in front of a mirror and trace the tanner-dipped sponge on either side of your stomach to create a defined waist. Flex your arms and trace along any muscled areas, and then finally apply a little in the cleavage area to accentuate the girls. Now for the face suck in your cheekbones and sweep the self-tanner soaked sponge in the hollows of the cheeks, and if you have a bit of a double chin stick out your jaw and sweep along the jaw-line. All of this tracing with the extra self-tanner on the sponge will help slim the face and body creating a fit and fabulous look for summer, and no sweat required.

Melt-Proof Makeup Must-Haves

hotweather.jpg (Slideshow)

Oh it’s getting hot out there, and whether you live in a steamy, humid climate or a dry arid one, finding makeup that won’t melt off your face can be challenging. I have a list of some tried and true melt-proof makeup must-haves that will keep you looking perfect all summer long.

1. Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Shine Mattifying Gel ($35, Peterthomasroth.com)
A mattifying primer helps absorb oil and minimize pore size, as well as keep the shine away.

2. Makeup Forever Face And Body Liquid Makeup ($40, Sephora.com)

This is a sweat-proof, waterproof foundation that won’t slip and slide off the face. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and it’s not only light and sheer in summer’s heat, but you can swim and play all day at the beach and have a flawless complexion.

3. Kryolan Dermacolor Waterproof Powder ($26, Alconeco.com)

Could there be a waterproof powder you ask? Why yes there is! When applied, it needs to set for 10 minutes before you brush away the excess with a powder brush. Who knew?

4. Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Forever Stay Eye Pencil in Chocolate Brown ($7.95, Drugstore.com)

Waterproof eyeliners are plentiful and mine is the very best.

5. CoverGirl Intense Shadow Blast Eyeshadow ($7.99, Drugstore.com)

This line of eyeshadows is waterproof and comes in awesome wearable shades for summer. My top picks are Brown Bling and Beige Blaze.

6. Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara ($20, Urbandecay.com)

This mascara is excellent and never gets flaky, so double-dose your lashes for a long-lasting flirty fringe that even synchronized swimmers would be envious of.

7. Hourglass Superficial Waterproof Bronzer ($45, Hourglasscosmetics.com)

This bronzer will keep you sun kissed and set for the whole day, and you can pair it with Benefit Benetint ($29, Benefitcosmetics.com) for a long-term rosy glow.

Now understand that almost every lipstick or lipgloss is waterproof as long as you don’t wipe your mouth so swipe on your favorite and you won’t have a melt down all season.

Beach Day Beauty

carmindybeach.jpg (Slideshow)

I’m a California girl, born and raised, so naturally, the beach is my favorite place in the world. Now that summer is here, I’m so excited to create a sun-safe, boho-chic beach environment. I figure, since you are spending the whole day there, you might as well make is as comfortable as possible! Here’s what I take: a printed Indian cotton beach quilt, a Balinese bamboo seashell adorned umbrella, extra large beach towels from Calypso Home, a big floppy hat from Eugenia Kim, canvas printed beach bags from Hable Construction, throw pillows my mom made with Batik fabrics from Indonesia, my trusty paddleboard, a small cooler for drinks, and some beauty products.

As a makeup artist and beauty expert, I’m fully aware of sun dangers and make sure to stay uber-protected. I’m fair and am prone to malasma if I’m in the sun too long, so I keep my hat and shades on, sit under the umbrella and slather on my favorite sunscreen, which is the SkinCeuticals UV Sport Defense SPF 45 ($38, Skinstore.com). I keep this in the cooler, so it’s refreshing when I reapply. Other products I keep in the cooler in a waterproof bag include Kiehl’s Ultra Moisturizing Eye Stick SPF 30 ($20, Kiehls.com) to protect my eyes– this sting-free stick glides on cooler when chilled, which helps with de-puffing. My Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Rose ($22.50, Fresh.com) is tossed in there, too, so it doesn’t melt. In my beach bag I keep Karastase Huile Celeste Shimmering Protective Mist For Sun Exposed Hair ($39, Kerastase-usa.com). It’s an absolute fave for very dry hair, because shimmering mist acts as a sunscreen for hair, leaving it conditioned and sparkling. When I paddleboard, I throw on my XCEL UV Protection UPF 50+ long sleeve surf shirt over my bikini top and keep my hat and shades on. This way I don’t get hit with the reflection of the sun’s harsh rays bouncing off the water.

So you see, you can still enjoy an entire day at the beach and keep your skin fully protected at the same time.

Tangerine Dream

januarytangerine.jpg (Slideshow)

Summer is all about bright pops of color. And this summer, hot hues of tangerine, coral and orange are the hot new thing. While we’ve never been shy to wear a bright orange nail, orange lips are a little more daring. But that is exactly what is on trend this season. Not only does this bold hue brighten up the face, but it enhances a subtle tan. My top picks for lips range from hydrating creamy lipsticks to barely-there sheer glosses. Check ‘em out.

1. Sephora and Pantone Universe Color Of The Year Cream Lipstick in Tangerine Tango Cream ($20, Sephora.com)
This is a vibrant but lightweight textured lipstick that looks amazing when paired with a sweep of bronzer to the face and a wash of gold across the lids.

2. Laura Mercier Tangerine Lipstick ($24, Bluemercury.com)
It’s a creamy shade of coral pink lipstick with a nice shine that really lasts. Pair with a black liquid cat eye and a shimmering sweep of highlighter under the brows, on inner corners, center of lids and tops of cheekbones to Carmindize the face.

3. Milani #D Glitzy Glamour Gloss in Stylish ($7.99, Walgreens.com)
An orange gloss with gold and copper flecks, this shade looks beautiful with a swirl of peach blush concentrated on the apples of the cheeks and a full set of black false lashes.

4. Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired By Carmindy Forever Stay Moisture Gloss in Creamsicle ($9.95, Drugstore.com)
This is the perfect light universal coral lip gloss that taste just like it sounds and looks pretty on clean sun-kissed skin at the beach. Add a slick of aqua waterproof eyeliner on the upper lash line.
