Uncovering the Differences Between BB Cream vs. CC Cream

BB cream vs. CC cream

BB creams? CC creams? Both can give you glowing skin, the low-maintenance way.

One of the biggest new trends in beauty is BB and CC creams for the skin. Choosing one can be a bit confusing, and a lot of ladies have been asking me what the real difference is in the BB cream vs. CC cream debate. The initials “BB” stand for “beauty balm.” These products are multitaskers: a non-brightening primer, light foundation, moisturizer and sunscreen in one, with built in anti-aging properties. A “CC” cream stands for “color corrective” and contains a skin brightening primer, light foundation, moisturizer, sunscreen, anti-aging ingredients and sometimes collagen boosters. The BB cream tends to be a bit heavier and better for dry skin, with a focus on prevention and maintenance, while the CC cream tends to be a tad lighter (so better for acne-prone skin) and focuses on concealing existing issues.

BB cream vs. CC cream

B.B. Cream SPF 27 PA++ ($38, sephora.com) and Olay Total Effects 7-in-1 Tone Correcting Moisturizer ($22.44, walmart.com).

These new formulas are basically a pumped up version of tinted moisturizers with added benefits. They are a quick fix to give your skin a boost, but I don’t think they have as much impact as applying a separate serum, moisturizer and sunscreen. They don’t cover up skin’s imperfections as well as using a proper foundation, and they don’t come in many shades, but I still love to wear them to the gym as a fast and easy, one-step way to get all the goods in one easy go. To apply them, use your fingers to lightly blend a dab of your cream of choice all over the face, including on the eyelids. For my trips to the gym, I apply the cream, skip powder, and just sweep on a little black mascara and a lip balm, and I’m out the door.

Struggling to find the right BB or CC for you? Here are just a few of our recommendations…

The New Makeup Line You Need to Try

Ted Gibson's lipstick range.

Ted Gibson’s lipstick range.

If you’ve ever watched “What Not To Wear” over the years then you definitely know my partner in beauty, the talented Ted Gibson. The hair master to stars like Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Ashley Greene took his talent to TLC where he snipped, styled and sprayed our lucky ladies on the show changing them from drab to fab with ease and grace. His beautiful line of hair care products are coveted by many and now he has just launched a sleek and sexy new makeup line.

Hair and makeup go hand in hand when it comes to transforming yourself into a Gibson girl, so this is a natural progression. The Ted Gibson lipstick collection has eight highly pigmented shades of colors ranging from the perfect nude —Gwen— to a rich red called Charice. Pair one of these gorgeous hues with a healthy dose of Raven Mascara, a lush formula that lifts and separates lashes for a total Hollywood glam look. The Eye Shadow Trio contains highlight, lid and contour shadows to create sultry eyes in a variety of colors all hand picked by Ted him self. When worn with his Gel Eyeliner and one of the Lip Shine Pigments that come in both matte and frosty formulas, you will blossom into that perfect Gibson Girl.

Ted has salons in both New York and Ft. Lauderdale where his products are sold. Visit tedgibsonbeauty.com for more information.

How to Wear Fall’s Jewel-Tone Eye Colors

Premiere Of "12 Years A Slave" - Arrivals

Actress Lupita Nyong’o shows us jewel tones done right.

The fall weather is here and as our coats, scarves, and boots come out so do our new makeup looks. This season, the best trend around is the jewel-tone eye—it’s a great way to play up your pretty eyes no matter what color or shape you have. Choose purple amethyst, sapphire blue, or emerald green shadows, mascaras, or liners to create new looks that will get you noticed. Here are the top five ways to go bold with jewel colors.

1. Opt for colored eye liners and mascaras.
Apply emerald green, amethyst, or sapphire blue eye liner along the upper lash line only and end it in a slight wing at the ends of the eyes. Sweep matching jewel-tone mascara on your top and bottom lashes and dab on a little cream highlighter under your brows (as well as inside the corners of the eyes and on the tops of the cheekbones). Keep your lids bare and fill in your brows with a brow pencil. Finish with a swirl of natural pink blush and a swipe of natural tinted lip balm.

2. Pair a jewel-tone eye liner with a matching shadow.
Sweep the liner along the upper lash line, then use the matching shadow and blend it along the eyelid from the lash line to the crease. Then, smudge it under the lower lash line. Blend in the three key places mentioned above with a shimmering powder highlighter, then apply black mascara. Top things off by sweeping on a natural flush to the cheeks and adding a sheer pink lip gloss.

3. Go for a sparkling smoky eye.
Use deep black eye liner along the upper and lower lashes as close to the roots of the lashes as possible. Then use a rich sparkling emerald green eye shadow to blend on the eyelids from the lash line, going just up and over the crease slightly. Apply a pale champagne highlighter under the brows and on the inside corners of the eyes. Finish it off with black mascara. Use a nude cheek color and lip gloss to keep all the focus on your eyes.

4. Mismatch jewel tones on the upper and lower parts of your eyes for a modern twist.
Choose a jewel-tone shadow like amethyst or sapphire and sweep in along the upper lash line and lid. Then go for a totally different hue like emerald and smudge it along the lower lash line. Skip eyeliner and just pair it with black mascara. Again, think neutral colors for cheeks and lips, so this cool pairing of shades will be front and center.

5. Try all three jewel-tone colors at once.
Start off with your highlighter under the brows, on the inside corners of the eyes and on top of the cheekbones. Now sweep the amethyst purple hue lightly in the crease of the eyes. Apply the sapphire blue a bit heavier along the lids from the lash line to the crease. Under the lower lash line blend on the emerald green color, then finish with black liner applied on the waterline of the eyes and a heavy dose of black mascara. Cheeks should be slightly rosy and lips look best with a hint of rosy glossy shine.

Which of these looks are you excited to try?

New Designer Beauty Lines: Are They Worth It?

Marc Jacobs nail polish

With the launch of their respective beauty lines, top fashion designers Marc Jacobs and Michael Kors seem to be following in the footsteps of their peers like Tom Ford and Giorgio Armani. The big question: Do they hit the mark or should they just stick to fashion?

I think that Michael Kors really stayed true to his brand in creating a makeup collection totally aligned with his aesthetic. The Michael Kors girl has a certain lifestyle and look, and these beauty products are exactly the shades you would imagine that girl wearing. The items are also packaged in golden goodness, which is totally true to Kors’ vision. From sporty to sexy to glam, this gilded girl’s beauty routine will stay in sync with everything Michael Kors.

Marc Jacobs launched a much larger range of colors in bold hues capturing the very essence of surprise that he always likes to shock us with. The black oval packaging feels good in the hand and the shade range gives the daring, trendy Marc Jacobs girl a variety to experiment with color.

Michael Kors beauty

The formulas of both products are quite good, but the price points are high so go ahead and splurge on your most coveted faves and save on your day to day basics. My top picks are the Michael Kors Liquid Shimmer Dry Oil Spray ($60, michaelkors.com), Bronze Powders ($50) and Lip Luster & Nail Lacquer sets ($32). In the Marc Jacobs line, I love the Style Eye-Con No. 7 Plush Shadows ($59, sephora.com), and the Enamored Hi-Shine Nail Lacquer colors ($18) are divine.

So yes, branching into beauty works for both of these style icons, and even if you can’t afford their high-end fashion you can capture a sense of runway with a beauty product or two!

3 Makeup Products That Are So Over

Lip liner

Switch out this pencil for something fresher.
Photo: Getty Images

There are a few products that were once total staples in our makeup bags but are now just dated, out of style and have made way for new technologies and formulas. If you want to switch to the freshest products but you’re not sure what to get rid of, here’s an easy list.

1. Cream-to-powder foundations

These foundations look heavy and can create a chalky look that coats the skin. Better to try liquid foundation, BB or CC creams, or even mousse or spray foundations, which will mimic the skin’s natural texture, look real and clean and allow skin to breathe.

2. Colored lip liners

Unless it’s your wedding day and you need to layer your lips to keep them from budging all day, then skip the colored lip liners. Perfectly drawn-on lips not only look like you’re stuck in the ’90s, but also leave the dreaded ring-around-the-lips-look when your lipstick or gloss wears off.

Better to embrace and love the natural shape of your lips and use lip stains, sticks, crayons, glosses and tinted balms for color. Trace the perimeter of the lips with nude or clear liners to keep the color from bleeding. You can also surround the lip edge with a cream highlight that makes lips look fuller. The lip crayon is also a perfect way to trace and fill in lips naturally.

3. Contour powder

Again, embracing your face and loving it — instead of trying to change its shape with dusty brown contour — is a much better way to celebrate your beauty. Instead of the dated and obvious contour, you should Carmindize the face by applying highlighter under the brows on the brow bone area, on the inside corners of the eyes and on tops of the cheekbones. The lightness will contrast against the skin’s natural hue, making the planes of the face stand out and your natural tone recede a bit — a more natural and beautiful way to showcase your face.

Get Excited for These Sure-to-Be-Hot Makeup Trends

I know it seems counterintuitive to start thinking about spring beauty the moment we enter fall, but with all the social media and reporting now coming from the New York and European runway shows, you can’t help but jump ahead six months. No need to bust out the hot shades for spring just yet, but it is good to know what will be trending in the future so you can plot and plan what to wear down the road. My favorite looks in beauty range from the bold lips at DKNY to the modern twist on eyeliner at Marc Jacobs.

Models wore red-orange lipstick at DKNY.
Photo: Imaxtree

All the looks I loved are very wearable and can translate easily from runway to real way. At DKNY, a bold orange lip was paired with a pretty flush of peach cheeks and almost no other makeup. To attempt this at look at home, smooth on a great CC cream, tap on peachy cream blush to the apples of the cheeks and finish with a little brow powder. Now apply a bold orange lip in a matte formula and skip the gloss for a more up-to-date feel. I adore this look for spring, as it’s chic, easy and very modern.

Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana’s luminous, golden makeup is perfect for spring.
Photo: Imaxtree

At Dolce & Gabbana, the romantic rose pink flush on lips and cheeks looked ethereal with glowing highlighted skin. To get the look, apply a liquid foundation followed by a pearlescent cream highlighter applied under the brows, on the inside corners of the eyes and on tops of the cheekbones. Also apply it on the center of the eyelids and around the perimeter of the lips. Now dust on a loose powder and blend on a rosy pink blush at the apples of the cheeks, sweeping back to the hairline. Apply a very subtle taupe shadow in the crease of the eyes, brown mascara on the top and bottom lashes, and then swipe on a creamy rose pink lipstick to the lips.

Michael Kors

Models looked sun-kissed at Michael Kors.
Photo: Imaxtree

Michael Kors’ runway show had bronzed beauties traipsing down the catwalk wearing nothing but bronzer and mascara, which is exactly how we want to look in the warmer months. To achieve this healthy, happy look, sweep a powder or cream bronzer in a “C” formation on the face, starting at the temples, sweeping along the sides of the face and blending under the cheekbones. A very light amount can be added to the forehead, bridge of the nose and the chin. Now apply black mascara on top and bottom lashes and finish with a nude lip balm.

Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs’ teal eyeliner had just the right amount of edge.
Photo: Imaxtree

Every Fashion Week, we wait in anticipation to see what Marc Jacobs will be doing on his models, and this year he did not disappoint! The cool eyeliner style was a much more modern approach to all the ‘60s cat eyes we’ve been seeing and made the models’ eyes look feline and fabulous. A teal liner was applied to the inner and outer corners and along the inside waterline, then paired with black mascara. To achieve this look, use a creamy pencil that is very sharp. Starting at the inside corners of the eyes, lightly draw a sharp line toward the bridge of the nose. Next, start at the outer corners of the eyes and draw a line outward in a dash. Now line the inside waterline of the eyes on the upper and lower sides of the rims. Polish off the look with mascara and tap on a baby pink lip tint.

This New Mascara is Mind-Blowing

mega-effects-avonIt’s not very often that a product comes along and totally blows my mind, but Avon’s new Mega Effects Mascara ($10, avon.com) is just about the most innovative thing I’ve seen in a while. The delivery system on this mascara is amazing. It acts like a paint brush for the lashes, not like a traditional tube-and-wand system. It adds up to 40% more mascara to the lashes than regular mascara.

Admittedly, I was a bit nervous to sweep on this mascara, but the flexible handle, lash-hugging bristles and deep intense color made the payoff totally worthwhile. It’s a bit strange at first to use the Wonderbrush wand, but it is so comfortable, you can’t imagine why nobody ever designed one like it before. The only issue I found with Mega Effects is the brush is a bit cumbersome for use on the bottom lash line, but honestly your top lashes wind up looking so voluminous and lush, you can actually skip the bottoms completely and not have a care. The best way to apply this mascara is to line up the wand with the base of your lash line, where it fits naturally, and begin to slightly wiggle it and sweep from the roots up to the tips. The results are epic!

Multitasking Makeup That Does Double Duty

s1405158-main-LheroWe all live such crazy busy lives, and most of us seem to be looking for shortcuts in every department. That is precisely why you need to cut out the extra products and tools in your beauty arsenal to make life faster and easier. There are many miraculous two-in-one products on the market today, and those are the ones to grab to keep things quick and simple when getting ready.

When it comes to your skin, getting a gorgeous, protected complexion in a rush can be tricky, so grab a CC cream to get the most efficient flawless face fast. It Cosmetics Anti-Aging Full Coverage CC Cream ($34.68, qvc.com) is my go-to product for protection against the harsh sun, and it also offers the nicest coverage without much blending. With an SPF of 50 and natural-looking, seamless coverage, it’s the perfect multi-tasker in the morning.

Get a glow with the LORAC Tantalizer Highlighter And Matte Bronzer Duo ($32, sephora.com). Sweep the highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones and then apply the bronzer on your temples, along the sides of the face and under your cheeks for a beachy vibe. Tag team your cheeks and lips with Revlon Baby Stick ($9, revlon.com) in Tahitian, Pink Passion or Sunset, which are the perfect brights for summer to flush your cheeks and give a pop to your lips. After applying your CC cream, just dab the stick onto cheeks for a healthy sheer flush and then swipe across lips for a natural hint of sheer juicy goodness.

If you’re a lip chick and need a bigger boost, try Josie Maran’s Argan Slimline Lipstick Plus Gloss ($25, sephora.com) in Pink Peony, a double ended lip duo that has your lip color on one end and your gloss topper on the other. This is a great day-to-night product as you can gloss by day and double up with the lipstick by night. If you are feeling super jazzy, then try the Sephora Collection Glitter Eyeliner And Mascara combo ($13, sephora.com) in Bewitched Black. This dual applicator brush allows you to bedazzle lashes with a hint of black glitter and the fine tip allows you to draw the glittery greatness along the upper lash line too.

See Summer’s Boldest And Most Beautiful Makeup Shades

Carmindy_Article-1Summer is here and what’s trending is bold, beautiful pops of crazy color. From nails to lips to liners, go bright and be bold! Nails are the easiest way to play with crazy fun summer shades like orange, hot pink, neon yellow and lime green.

My top summer picks are M2MDamoreJon Nail Polish in Sour Puss and Lemon Drop and Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Kook A Mango ($6.59, target.com) and Shrimply Devine ($6.48, walmart.com). You can always pair a vibrant nail with a punch of color on the face but I’d rather you don’t match hues. Try an orange nail with a red lip or a green liner with a coral nail to look modern.

On lips, brights look so great with a tanned summer glow, so pair your bronzer with a flashy smile. I’m obsessed with MAC Mineralize Rich in Lady At Play ($22, maccosmetics.com) and Bite Beauty Cuvee Cream Deluxe Lipstick in Cuvee Coral ($34, sephora.com) and wear these corals with a swirl of bronzer and black mascara only.

Play up your eyes with an electric shock of blue or green using waterproof liners that won’t move if you are swimming in the ocean or pool. Try Make Up For Ever Aqua Liners in #4 or #5 ($23, sephora.com) or CoverGirl Queen Collection Vivid Impact Eyeliner in Jade ($6.74, target.com) and keep the rest of the face neutral so the eyes make the main statement.

Cheeks can get in on the action, too, with Jose Maran’s Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Pink Escape ($22, sephora.com) and wear it with a sweep of golden bronze on the eyes, black mascara and a hot pink tinted sheer lip product like Tarte Lipsurgence Lip Stain ($24, sephora.com).

Get Beach-Ready With This Head-To-Toe Beauty Plan

small_beachIt’s finally beach time. Hooray! I’m doing a full head-to-toe overhaul to get ready for all the fun in the sun, and you should too. The goal is not to be perfect, but to be healthier and feel more energetic when enjoying the hotter months, so give my routine a try and see if it works for you.

I like to begin from the inside out when prepping for my vacation time, so the first thing I do is make sure I’m drinking 8-10 full glasses of water each day. The only other thing I’ll drink is coffee or tea (no sugar or milk), and of course I drink my wine or prosecco with dinner – a girl’s gotta live, right? I take anti-oxidant vitamins and plenty of B12 to keep my skin looking good and my energy up. I also take dandelion, a natural diuretic that flushes out excess water weight.

I eat super clean when gearing up to show more skin, so my summer prep diet goes like this: Breakfast is an egg white omelet with veggies or Greek yogurt with fresh berries and raw nuts; lunchtime is usually a grilled salmon salad or kale salad with roasted chicken; dinner consists of Japanese food like sashimi, seaweed salad and maybe one sushi roll with brown rice or sometimes a lean steak with Swiss chard. If I get peckish during the day, a Greens or Kind Bar or some hummus on a rice cake does the trick to kill the snacking.

I try for four to five days of working out, which includes doing 45 minutes of cardio, like speed walking (I’m not a runner) or the elliptical and one hour of weight training with a trainer. If you can’t get a trainer, then grab a Self Magazine and follow along their workouts, which always seem to focus on beach body toning.

Now after a long hard winter I’m usually super pale, so I bust out my self-tanner and give myself a little glow. I start in the shower where I buff my face and body with white sugar to exfoliate all the dry and dead winter skin off. When I get out I smooth on self tanner for face and body. I make sure and moisturize my body really well each day to ensure soft and supple skin and slather on a high SPF each day, so I never get burned and stay protected from nasty aging UV rays. I like to get my hair trimmed so it looks healthier and is ready for all the salt water and chlorine damage I may do to it over the course of the summer, and I like to smooth on a little argan oil on the ends to keep them from splitting.

I don’t like wearing a ton of makeup in the summer, so I make sure my brows are perfectly groomed and then book an appointment at a beauty salon to get my eyelashes tinted. They use vegetable dye, so it is safe and by tinting them black I can skip mascara on busy days and still feel like my eyes are nicely framed. Nothing beats a whiter brighter smile with a tan, so Crest White Strips ($34.99, drugstore.com) are my go-to for keeping teeth gleaming. I throw them on about 30 minutes each day to get the best results.

Lastly, I stock my beach bag with must-haves: a brand new sarong, hat, bright lip color, good book and sunglasses. So ladies, let me know how this pre-summer beach beauty prep routine works out for you!

How To Control Oily Skin This Summer

Nanoblur-164456_LEach spring and summer I am bombarded with questions from women about controlling their shiny skin in hot weather. I have found a few wonderful new finds and can explain how to apply these new formulas to ensure your complexion stays smooth and oil-slick-free all day long.

For ladies that suffer from large pores and oily skin, let’s remember the silver lining to this type of skin: You won’t age as quickly as those of us with a drier complexion. To shrink the look of your pores, begin your day with a good glycolic cleanser like Mario Badescu’s Glycolic Foaming Cleanser ($15, mariobadescu.com) for a fresh start. Next, use a sponge or your fingers to apply a CC cream that will protect, moisturize, even out and smooth the skin. I love the It Cosmetics CC Cream with SPF 50 ($34.68, qvc.com) for a flawless grease-proof complexion and a heavy dose of sun protection.

Nanoblur ($19.99, trynanoblur.com) is going to be your real secret weapon. It’s a revolutionary skin smoother that erases the appearance of large pores, mattes skin down in an instant without ever looking chalky, and allows you to finally relax in the heat and humidity. Women with dry skin that might appear shiny in a few areas can mix it will a little moisturizer to combat these areas. News about Nanoblur spread like wildfire in London and Canada where it launched and is now finally available in the States at Wallgreens. Lastly, dust on a bit of It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores HD Silk Micro-Powder ($24, beauty.com) for smooth sailing all spring and summer.

The Best Ways To Bronze

03779674_zi_sunlightIf you are like me and feeling pasty white after a long hard winter, then perk up your complexion with a sun-kissed glow. There is a slew of new self-tanners and bronzers this year, which will jump-start your mood and warm up your skin just in time for sundress season.

If you want an all-over glow that is subtle and gradual, try the new Jergens Natural Glow Three Days To Glow Moisturizer ($9.99, soap.com). Applying this product every day for three days will slowly build up a natural-looking tan without going overboard. For a one-time application product,  go for the new Brazilian Peel Brazilian True Tan ($39, sephora.com). You get a wonderful sunless tan without that nasty odor, thanks to jojoba oil. Plus, the added shea butter and aloe vera makes it super moisturizing.

If it’s a face bronzer you are looking for, then swirl on a warm glow with a little bit of shimmer. Diorskin Nude Tan Healthy Glow Enhancing Powder ($55, sephora.com) is the perfect blend of bronzy goodness with a slight shimmer to create a radiant beach babe look. The kabuki brush that comes along with it perfectly sweeps on this sunny complexion booster for a vacation glow. Physicians Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Airbrushing Bronzing Veil Deluxe Edition ($15.99, ulta.com) is one of my favorites as its unique Italian formula acts like a combination of cream and powder for a smooth glowing airbrushed tan look to the skin. It literally melts into the skin and blends on so naturally people will think you just returned from an island.

The Best Long-Wearing Makeup For A Look That Lasts All Day

Makeup artist applying red lipstick

The last thing you want is a red lip that fades. Luckily, these long wearing products have you covered.
Photo: Luca Cannonieri / GoRunway.com

In the past, women searched for long-wearing smudge-proof products only to find options that dried out the skin or were a total pain to get off. Lasting lip products left you with a cracked and parched pout, waterproof mascaras were so tough to remove you needed a jackhammer to get them off,  and all-day foundations were so heavy they caked and built up on the skin, erasing any sign of radiance. The new long-wearing formulas have changed for the better, and many companies are offering not only melt-proof makeup, but makeup that can be soothing, natural looking, and actually good for your skin.

BB creams hold up all day long without sucking the hydration out of the skin and offer sun protection, antioxidant-infused moisture, coverage for imperfections and oil control. My favorites are Physicians Formula Super BB Cream ($14.95, physiciansformula.com) and Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream ($39, sephora.com), which both create an amazing complexion that looks glowy all day and night.

Long-wearing eyeliners are now super easy to apply and don’t tug or pull along the delicate lid area because of their smooth gel formulas. Try the CoverGirl Liquiline Blast Eyeliner ($6.94, walmart.com), and play with different shades like Blue Boom or Green Glow to play up eyes in springtime hues. To remove, simply dip a new Precision Tips Q-Tip ($3.30, soap.com) into a bit of eye makeup remover and trace over the liner once with the end dipped in the remover then again with the clean end for instant erasing.

Waterproof mascaras can break lashes, are difficult to take off and sometimes get flaky in dry weather, but you need not ever struggle again. Run, don’t walk, and go get the new Blinc Amplified Mascara ($26, sephora.com) for a budge-proof, volumizing, lengthening, defining, and curling formula. This cool tube technology covers the lashes in tiny tubes that seal and never smudge. The best part is that this mascara simply washes off with a little warm water in the sink, requiring no rubbing at all. It’s ideal for sensitive eyes and mature eyes that have a heavier lid to contend with, as you will never wind up with little black specks along the upper lid.

Day-long lip color has truly come a long way and with the creamy texture of Nars Velvet Gloss Stick ($24, sephora.com) and Velvet Matte Lip Pencil ($25, sephora.com), lips will look their their best and never lose the hue. I’m obsessed with rotating shades and wearing a different one each day.

So keep your “face” on for hours and hours with these new formulas, and feel confident that your skin will stay supple and fresh.

The Best BB Cream Collection

0004438607836_500X500With BB creams being all the rage these days, it’s only fitting that other makeup products should follow suit and be multi-taskers too. Beauty balms make our lives so much easier, cutting out all the crazy steps of layering on a myriad of products to get results. These types of creams usually contain powerful sunscreens, anti-aging properties, moisturizers and tints to even out skin tone, but Physicians Formula has created the Super BB Collection, which does much more than that.

The Super BB All-In-1 Beauty Balm Makeup With SPF 30 ($14.95, physiciansformula.com) packs a punch of 10 different beauty benefits in one easy cream. It sooths, moisturizes, protects, firms, primes, perfects, conceals, brightens, softens lines and is long wearing. It doesn’t get better than that! I wore it for a week straight and have to say it’s probably one of my favorite BB creams out there. It wasn’t thick or heavy like a lot of BBs can be, and my skin totally glowed.

There is also the Super BB All-In-1 Beauty Balm Powder ($9.76, drugstore.com), which I have never seen before and am totally in love with. This fine weightless veil diffuses the appearance of imperfections and erases any little bit of shine you may get and with zinc and titanium dioxide. It’s also the perfect way to reapply sunscreen through the day by just dusting it on.

Then there is the Super BB All-In-1 Beauty Balm Concealer ($12.95, physiciansformula.com) to erase dark circles in a natural clean way that never winds up looking cakey. This concealer works seamlessly when applied on top of the Super BB Cream and also helps with puffiness and vein coverage. This entire collection is paraben-free, gluten-free and is definitely among my spring makeup bag musts.

Spring’s Best Budget Beauty Finds

CARMINDY-MAKEUP_ARTICLEThank goodness it is finally spring! We can celebrate the season with new makeup that’s budget friendly. No need to spend a ton of money on colors and formulas of the moment when you can just skip on over to your local drugstore and pick up a few fabulous new products.

I’ve been playing with some of spring’s must-have colors and products, and here is what I’ll be adding to my beauty arsenal this season:

For eyes it’s all about bold, bright hues that last through the day. Try Maybelline Eyestudio Color Tattoo 24HR ($5.59, drugstore.com) in Tenacious Teal or Edgy Emerald. You can use an angled brush to draw a colorful line along the upper lashes using this long wearing cream shadow as a liner, or blend over the entire lid using your ring finger for a waterproof eye boost that screams springtime. Just pair this strong shade with a neutral lip and cheek so the eyes are the main focus. I applied this look the other night, and I swear it didn’t crease or smudge all night.

On skin, erase shine and the look of large pores with L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Miracle Blur ($19.99, drugstore.com). This skin smoothing miracle cream creates flawless looking skin for ladies who get tend to get the greasies or agonize over enlarged pores. I love it, because as I’m getting older my texture is not as tight and taut as it used to be, and this product creates a seamless finish so my liquid foundation glides over it.

Lips make a big splash with color, so try CoverGirl Lip Perfection Jumbo Gloss Balm ($8.99, ulta.com) in Watermelon Twist or my new obsession, Coral Twist. These glossy sheer balms are perfect for spring, and you can get that fantastic bright color without feeling the weight of a heavy opaque lipstick.

If you want to create a sexy bronze complexion after all the pastiness of winter, sweep on Physician’s Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting Airbrushing Bronzing Veil Deluxe Edition ($11.16, drugstore.com). This sexy warm powder creates a radiant glow which pairs beautifully with either the bold eye or lip for spring.

New Lipstick Crayons To Try Now

CHUBBY-STICKS_ARTICLEWith all the lovely lippy products out there, one has become a new cult favorite for its total ease of use: It’s now all about the chubby pencil. With a fat lip crayon, you can line your lips and fill them in with color that now comes in many different textures and hues. This super stick for lips cuts out those annoying extra steps in your makeup routine, like having to use a separate lip liner, lip balm and lipstick or gloss. These chubby babies pack it all.

Nars Velvet Gloss Pencil ($24, sephora.com) is an incredible long-wearing stick that gives you a glossy finish and is never sticky or tacky. This one is my go-to evening lip crayon, and I love to play with the bright bold shade of Mexican Rose or the sexy pinky hue of New Lover.

Nars Velvet Matte Pencil ($24, sephora.com) is full of rich pigment for a matte look and is enriched with vitamin E. It’s incredibly long-lasting and never dries out your lips, which so many long-wear lip products tend to do. My favorite red is Dragon Girl and my favorite nude is Belle Du Jour.

My new go-to lip balm-style crayon is the Neutrogena Moisture Smooth Color Stick ($7.97, walmart.com). This one is made with shea butter and fruit extracts, and the smooth formula conditions your lips and provides beautiful soft color that glides on in a sheer wash.

Clinique‘s Chubby Stick ($16, sephora.com) is a hydrating blend of natural mango butters and jojoba oils and comes in fun bright shades that glide on sheer and leave lips feeling supple.

The Lipstick Queen line has the China Town Glossy Pencil ($20, barneys.com) for a sheer glossy formula in fiery shades that will look seriously sexy at night.

So forget about your multi-step lip layers and grab your new chubby friend!

The Trick To Wearing Bold Beauty Trends: Moderation

2011 MTV Video Music Awards - ArrivalsI remember a time during the 90’s when minimalist hair and makeup was all the rage and looking like you didn’t try was actually chic. Although that period of time wasn’t much fun, I’m realizing that we are now at risk of overdoing it and going full speed ahead into anything but natural.

Cruising through a local New York CVS today, I witnessed crystal nail stickers, bold bright neon hair crayons, mega volume mascaras, lip colors that would make your grandma blush, and tattooed eye shadows that you can see from the moon. I then walked past a local high school and saw girls using all of the above, and I am concerned.

The onslaught of celebs like Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry have girls scrambling to try outrageous hair colors, makeup looks and nail trends in such a fever that I think they are missing the point and losing themselves completely. These celebrities are entertainers, and wearing a bright, bold look gets people’s attention on stage and on the red carpet. In the real world, the all-at-once approach just doesn’t work. You should pick only one or two attention-grabbing trends at a time, or you will wind up looking, well, just nuts! If you want to play with a cool unnatural hair color, then go for it, but apply makeup in an equally bold hue to only one feature, like your lips. A blue streak in the hair paired with a silver liner looks awesome, but if you pair it with a hot pink lip, a smoky eye and nail bling, and you wind up looking downright tacky. If you want shimmery jewels on the nails, then pair it with black liquid liner and nude makeup for something sophisticated and modern. Bright red lips won’t work with a wild rainbow eye shadow combination, so slow down and go for one or the other, not both.

Do you hear me ladies? The great news is we have fun choices for a change, but please strive for style, instead of silly. Have fun, but be sane!

The Absolute Best Collection Of Cruelty-Free Brushes

urlThe right makeup brushes are a must for any makeup girl, and with so many real animal-hair bristles out there, it’s hard to find synthetic versions that actually work well. Recently I discovered a brilliant Brazilian beauty company that offers some of the best in vegan makeup brushes I have ever seen.

Sigma is a brush, cosmetics, beauty accessories and skincare business that has an amazing collection of flawless synthetic brushes that work incredibly well. As I played with them, I realized that they work the same, if not better, than my real animal hair brushes. I love the Essential Kit ($120, sigmabeauty.com) that comes in Mr. Bunny (black handles) and Mrs. Bunny (blue and pink handles). There are 12 brushes in the kit that will do everything you need:

1. The Large Powder Brush ($21) gives cheeks a soft swirl of color.

2. The Duo Fibre Brush ($20) is perfect for swirling on cream blush.

3. The Large Angled Contour Brush ($16) is ideal for applying bronzer.

4. The Small Angle Brush ($10) precisely applies eye shadow as eyeliner.

5. The Pencil Brush ($10) smudges eyeliner to perfection to create the ultimate smoky eye.

6. The Foundation Brush ($16) smoothes on liquid makeup.

7. The Tapered Blending Brush ($12) sweeps on all over eye shadow with a smooth swipe.

8. The Concealer Brush ($10) is just the right size for under eyes.

9. The Eyeliner Brush ($10) can double as a liquid or cream liner brush, or you can clean it off, dip it into a little concealer and use it to spot conceal tiny imperfections.

10. The Medium Angled Shading Brush ($10) is a great crease contour brush.

11. The Eye Shading Brush ($10) can concentrate more drama at outer corners of the eyes for definition.

12. The Large Shader ($12) will sweep a layer of shadow across the main lid with ease.

The only things missing from this collection are a good powder brush and a lip brush, but they can be purchased separately. While you’re at it, purchase a brush holder to keep them organized, and don’t forget to regularly wash your brushes.

Find The Perfect Pink For Your Skin Tone

PINK_ARTICLESpring is almost here, so it’s time to break out the pretty pastels. Pink is such a girly color, and it conjures up feelings of youth, vibrancy, romance and love. Pink is actually a universal shade that works on every woman, regardless of her age and skin tone, so it’s really about finding the correct makeup for your unique skin.

Women with fair skin should stick to cool shades of pink that create a fresh, soft look. On medium skin tones, rose pink makeup looks incredible. Olive and mocha-skinned ladies look radiant in shades of coral pink, and if you have darker coloring, bold bright pinks play off your skin beautifully.

For Fair Skin
Try the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Fresh Pink ($6.44, target.com) and Clinique‘s Chubby Stick in Curvy Candy ($16, sephora.com) for the lips.

For Medium Skin
Dior Rosy Glow Healthy Glow Awakening Blush in Petal ($44, sephora.com) will look great, along with L’Oréal Paris Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick in Eternal Rose ($9.99, drugstore.com).

For Olive And Mocha-Toned Skin
Sephora Collection Microsmooth Blush Duo in Guava Glow ($17, sephora.com), and I like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Trollop ($18, occmakeup.com).

For Darker Skin
Try Lorac Baked Matte Satin Blush in Flaunt ($24, sephora.com) and Nars Lipstick in Schiap ($26, sephora.com).

You can have a bit more fun with pink when it comes to your lips, so don’t be afraid to try shades outside of your comfort zone. A pop of pink will definitely brighten your day, so blend it on and look pretty in pink.
