5 Ways To Stretch Out Your Summer

If you’re not ready to let go of the sun-kissed skin and sexy highlights that come with the long and lazy days of summer, scoop these tips from the Beauty Bloggerati on how to make your summer seem endless.

1. Use bronzer to keep your glow on year round.
Just like wearing white clothes past Labor Day, bronzed skin can look gorgeous all year. “I love a bronzed glow and it’s the last thing I want to let go of when summer leaves us,” says Tammy Gibson of A Mom in Red High Heels. She suggests using Diorskin Shimmer Star in Amber Diamond for a refined, illuminating sheen that looks healthy and not too makeup-y. “I like to sweep the bronzer in a circular motion around the eye,” says Dior makeup artist Ricky Wilson. “It actually brightens up the eye area without looking unnatural.”

2. Update your makeup bag.
“Mix your bright summer makeup with fall colors to ease the transition from one season to the next,” suggests Elessa Vavon of Purse Buzz. Celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal from Mally Beauty says a colorful version of the smoky eye is a great way to stretch summer into fall. “A bright smoky eye is fun and easy to achieve,” says Roncal. “Use a Q-tip to smudge a bright shadow along your upper and lower lash line. For a more dramatic look, blend the color all the way up into the crease.”

3. Bring the ocean into your bathroom.
Work some beach-inspired beauty products into your primping routine to keep that summer state of mind in tact. “A nice sea salt body scrub such as Origins Incredible Spreadable Scrub Sea Salt Body Smoother will help satisfy your craving for sea water,” says Marta Walsh of Talking Makeup. Add it to a loofah sponge and rub on your body in large circular motions to loosen dead skin while encouraging better circulation. To keep skin soft and supple, we like H2O+ Bali Breeze Soothing Body Butter with juicy mango, creamy coconut and nurturing deep-sea botanicals.

4. Transition your wardrobe with layers.
Light and flowy summer wardrobe pieces can easily transition to fall by layering warmer pieces over them.  “Give your maxi dress a fall twist by wearing it with tights and a cute belted ‘grandpa’ sweater,” says Lisa Gradie of These Lips Are Made for Glossin’. Open-toed heels with tights are also on trend for autumn.

5. Extend your summer highlights.
Summer highlights are easy to maintain in the fall providing you take a few key steps to preserve your color. “Use a color-enhancing shampoo and conditioner once a week,” suggests Joseph Mullen, colorist at Blackstones Salon in NYC. “This will help control any fading and prevent the dry, flat look that the sun can give hair.” If your hair is ultra pale to light blonde, Redken color consultant David Stanko suggests Redken Blonde Glam Perfect Platinum Color Enhancer to neutralize brassiness and preserve warm tones. If you really want to keep your highlights looking their best, Jennifer Long from Beyond Beauty Basics recommends you “make an appointment to get a toner or gloss treatment to tune-up the summer’s highlights.”

Scorching Star Makeovers

After months of the same old thing, it’s only natural to get bored with your look. These A-list stars are no exception — from drastic color changes to dramatic cuts, we’ve seen them do a complete about-face on their look, ditching their signature style to forge hot new beauty trends . Keep reading to see some of our favorites, then go try them on in the Makeover Studio.

Hally Berry’s Sexy Pixie
When you’re blessed with Halle Berry’s gorgeous bone structure, you don’t need a ton of hair to hide behind. The stunning star chopped off her grown-out layers for a fresher pixie cut that frames her face and shows off those amazing cheekbones.

Katherine Heigl’s Blonded Brunette
Katherine Heigl is almost as famous for her flaxen locks as she is for her acting. So it was quite a shock when she showed up on the red carpet sporting a new, darker ‘do. The blonde bombshell embraced one of the biggest hair color trends of the season, the blonded brunette. It’s a great option for someone looking to go darker, but who isn’t quite ready to go full-on brown. The golden undertones help keep it warm and complements a wide variety of skin tones.

Selena Gomez’s Grown-Up Bob
Teen queen Selena Gomez has been growing up before our very eyes, so it was only a matter of time before she ditched the little girl long locks for a more sophisticated style. We love this age-appropriate bob because it gives her a more grown-up look that still has a little bit of youthful hipness to it.

Scarlett Johansson Lightens Up
The smoky-voiced actress has always been a hair color chameleon — from blonde to brown and back again — so we weren’t totally shocked when she dyed her hair red. We think this warm red shade is a huge improvement over the dark, cool-toned red she’s been spotted around town with these past few months. The golden undertones warm up her pale complexion and draw attention to her sparkling eyes.

Ciara’s Hip Crop
Always ahead of the fashion curve, the sultry songstress recently underwent a dramatic transformation, chopping her super-long tresses into a short and sexy asymmetrical style. Her old style was dragging her down, but this new short ‘do guarantees that Ciara will be the center of attention for all the right reasons.

The Right Way To Go Bronze

Stacy Keibler June 17 2009

Photo: © Sara De Boer / Retna Ltd.

Bronzer is the easiest (and safest) way to get a gorgeous, sun-kissed look. For the most natural looking glow, it’s key to pick the right shade.

Here’s the secret: Go with a powder or cream bronzer that is actually lighter than you think you need. Anything too dark could make you look orange, dirty, or even stripy. You should also avoid overly shimmery bronzers, which end up looking fake, especially during the day.

The best type of bronzer to buy is a sheer, neutral light brown shade. Our new favorite? Benefit’s One Hot Minute (below). This luminous rosy gold shade looks great on every skin tone and the sheer formula guarantees your skin looks naturally gorgeous. Other awesome picks: MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Sunny By Nature, Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder and Nars The Multiple Bronzer.

Benefit One Hot Minute

Here’s the best way to apply bronzer so your faux-glow looks believable: First, sweep the bronzer on the highest points of your face — cheekbones, chin, nose, browbone, temples — to create a warm glow. “You want to mimic how you naturally tan,” says Three Custom Color Specialists founder Trae Bodge. “When applied all over the face, bronzer can tend to look a bit dirty, whereas on the high points it gives a very natural looking glow.” Next, apply a bright, cheery blush on the apples of cheeks to create a sun-kissed pop of color. “The addition of color to the bronzer gives a fresh, healthy, youthful glow,” says Bodge.

Kamila Gets A Sexy Heidi Klum Makeover

Kamilla before

Kamila Kaminska, a 26-year-old publicist in New York City, was sick and tired of her long locks and it was about time! “I really haven’t changed my hairstyle since I was 11-years-old. It’s always been this long and straight–it’s sort of a security blanket for me. I never know how to style it, so I just let it hang there,” she says. We introduced her to Pantene Celebrity Stylist Danilo who took one look at Kamila and agreed: “Her hair is weighing her down, which makes her face look long and hides her pretty cheekbones. The cut also doesn’t have any shape.”

Heidi Klum makeover look

Of course, first we had to try out a few virtual makeover looks in the Makeover Studio to see what she’d look like with shorter hair. Of all the looks we tried, everyone fell in love with Heidi Klum’s long bob. And for good reason: “I call this cut a collared bob because it hits right at the collarbone, which is an extremely versatile length,” says Danilo who works with supermodel Heidi Klum regularly.

Off With Her Ponytail!
There was no messing around during this makeover. To make the first cut, Danilo gathered her long locks into a low ponytail and lopped it off just past her shoulders. The look on Kamila’s face: priceless.

Time To Recuperate
Not only did Kamila need a little pampering to calm her nerves, but her hair needed some TLC too.

2-hair-mask-2.jpg

Danilo first used Pantene Pro-V Clarifying Shampoo, $3.99 to get rid of product build up. “I’ve been doing hair for over 20 years and many people think you have to use expensive products to get great results, but I’m a true believer in Pantene. For example, this shampoo is excellent for getting rid of product build up without stripping your hair and it creates incredible shine,” says Danilo. Next, he slathered Kamlia’s squeaky-clean locks with Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Time Renewal Mask, $4.99. “I use this on all of my clients. My nickname for it is ‘red carpet finish’ because it makes hair very soft, shiny, and easy to style,” he says.

Shaping Her “Collared” Bob
Once Kamila’s hair was in prime condition, Danilo started fine-tuning her haircut. “You’ll see this will be a very versatile cut,” says Danilo. The proof: Look at the all the different ways Heidi Klum styles this haircut.

makeover hair cut

He started by creating long layers that are about 3 inches from the ends. “This will enhance the swing of her hairstyle,” he says. Next, he snipped in some bangs. “They’re about four inches long which makes it easy to blend them in with your hair if you want them to disappear or style them forward,” says Danilo.

Creating The Ultimate Blowout
Now that the cut was complete, he started styling her hair. “Once you have a good solid blow-out, you can do many different looks with this cut,” says Danilo.

spritzing hair

First, he spritzed Pantene Pro-V Volume Root Lifter Gel, $3.99, all over. “It says it’s just for the roots, but I love this stuff and actually mist it through to the tips because you want fullness everywhere,” says Danilo. Then he blow dried her hair using a Sonia Kashuk Tools Bristle Hair Brush, $14.99, to brush roots backwards, forwards, upwards and side-to-side. “This technique creates great body,” says Danilo.

hair rollers

Once Kamila’s hair was dry, he used a two-inch barrel curling iron to create massive pin curls all over. “This will smooth the hair so it is glossy and swingy,” he explains. He worked on two- to three-inch wide sections of hair at a time, coating each one with Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Frizz Control Ultra-Smoothing Balm, $4.99. “This protects hair from the heat and creates great shine,” he explains.

The Final Look!
“OMG! I can’t believe how gorgeous this style is! I feel like a completely different person, and love it. It has so much more style and I can tell that it’ll be easy to manage,” says Kamila. Not only does her Heidi Klum-inspired look have amazing style, but it also does wonders for her features. “You can truly see her face now. The shorter length and the deeper side part really bring out her cheekbones and her eyes,” says Danilo.

One Cut Three Ways

Sexy & Tousled

Sleek & Sideswept

A Chic Bump-do

Look 1: Sexy & Tousled. After brushing out the pin curls, Danilo spritzed Pantene Pro-V Texture Hairspray, $3.99, all throughout Kamila’s hair to build texture, then he finger-styled her look into place. “This spray has a moderate hold that works for me and not against me. It’s such a good way to build volume,” says Danilo.

Look 2: Sleek & Sideswept.
Taming down the volume was easily done by just brushing through her hair several times. Danilo created a deep side part and smoothed out her strands. “A deeper side part brings out her cheekbones and makes the sweep in front look really gorgeous,” says Danilo.

Look 3: A Chic Bump-do.
Danilo shows that a bob can still be styled into a glam updo. First, he teased the crown area to create volume, then lightly brushed her hair back and pinned it in place.

The Finishing Touch
A new hairstyle calls for new makeup too. Since her new cut enhanced the structure of Kamila’s cheekbones, makeup artist Erica Whelan played them up by sweeping a matte bronzer in the hallows of Kamila’s cheeks, then blended Bobbi Brown Blush in Soft Pink, $22, on the apples of her cheeks. A few swipes of black mascara and a punchy peach gloss completed her gorgeous new look.

How To Make A Sexy Side Bun

The side bun has taken Hollywood by storm and it’s easy to see why. It’s a sexy style that can hold up to humid temperatures and works for any occasion, casual or glamorous. It’s also super-easy to master–all you have to do is create a low side ponytail, then twist the tail until it wraps up into a bun and pin it in place. Let a few pieces fall out so it looks a little messy on purpose.

Humidity-Proof Hairstyles

Finding a hairstyle that holds up to summer’s hot and humid temperatures doesn’t have to be a struggle. In fact, three of the season’s hottest trends — waves, braids and ponytails — not only look fabulous, they’re also insanely practical. The secret behind their wearability is all in the texture: a messy, slightly undone finish allows you to be less precise with the style and drastically reduces your chances of a total tress meltdown. Here’s how to do them:

Beachy Waves

“There’s something very organic about natural waves that is very sexy,” says Tresemmé celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak, whose clients include Zooey Deschanel and Halle Berry. Not only do they look great, they’re also super-easy to achieve. If
you already have a natural wave, apply an anti-frizz cream to
towel-dried hair to define texture and reduce frizz, then scrunch your
hair and twist sections away from your face. Her pick: Tresemmé Anti-Frizz Secret Smoothing Crème. If you have straight hair, spritz a spray gel on wet hair to
create texture, then scrunch all over and finger-tousle as you dry it.

Braids & Twists

“Braids are a great way to open up the face, tame thick tresses or give
texture to fine hair. It’s also a great option when you are having a
bad hair day,” says Herbal Essences celebrity stylist Charles Baker
Strahan, whose celeb clients include Blake Lively and Leighton Meester. Start with dry hair that has a wavy texture, which will hold the braid. Take small sections of hair at your part or hairline, then braid
to the ends. Secure with a clear elastic and lightly spritz the braid
with a spray gel. His pick: Herbal Essences Set Me Up Spray Gel. Loosely tuck the bottom of the braid under other pieces of hair so that the ends aren’t visible.

Pretty Ponytails

Turn a boring ponytail into a fun and flirty style by adding in some
waves and twists. Start with dry, wavy hair. Gather strands up loosely
into a ponytail, leaving a few front pieces loose. Secure the ponytail
with an elastic, then loosely twist the front strands. Pin them back,
then set the style with a light hold, flexible hairspray. We like Oribe Superfine Hair Spray.

Summer-Proof Your Makeup

Cameron Diaz makeup

Cameron Diaz knows how to keep her makeup
from melting off in the scorching summer heat
Photo: © Michael Bezjian/WireImage.com

Summer is here and with it comes soaring temperatures, sky-high humidity and lots and lots of sweat. All of which makes keeping your makeup from sliding off your face an almost impossible feat.

“Heat and humidity break down the makeup formulas, causing everything from mascara to lip gloss to separate and smear,” says Chase Aston, The Body Shop’s international makeup artist, whose clients include Cameron Diaz and Elle McPherson. Read on to find out how to keep your makeup in place when things start heating up.

- Start with a clean, primed face. Excess oil on the skin can cause slippage faster than you can say “oil slick.” Prep your skin by cleansing and toning, then moisturize with a mattifying lotion. Aston recommends applying an oil-free face primer to give your makeup extra staying power.

Body Shop Hot Brights Lip & Cheek Stain

- Choose oil-free, water-resistant products. “Most makeup formulas contain natural oils that, once they warm up, will tend to slip and slide all over the face,” says Aston. Instead of a cream foundation, choose a lightweight mineral powder foundation. Create a smudgeproof eye by using powder shadows and a waterproof liner and mascara. For lips and cheeks, ditch the heavy lipstick and melt-prone cream blushes in favor of sweat-resistant lip and cheek stains. He suggests The Body Shop Hot Brights Lip Shine and Cheek Stain. Find out some of our favorite waterproof picks too!

- Stop a meltdown in its tracks. If your makeup starts to slide around midday, use a large white tissue to gently blot down your hairline, eyes, corners of the nose, lips, chin and jawline to soak up oil and clean up smudges. If your eye shadow has creased, close your eyelid and press your finger against it to smooth the remaining shadow and wipe away liner and mascara. Wipe your lips clean and add a wash of balm or gloss to freshen up.

Staff Summer Makeover: Mina Gets Beachy & Bright

Summer is a great time to change up your look, something Mina Pontarelli, Director of Experience & Community for Daily Makeover, was ready for — she’s had the same style and color for over 10 years! Mina was getting tired of creating the same hair and makeup look every morning and was looking for a way to brighten up her routine and get her out of an extended beauty rut. “I really needed a change, especially to my hair color. It looks so dark and I feel like lightening it will really get me ready for summer,” says Mina.

Mina haircut summer makeover

A Quick Snip To Tidy Up
Mina’s long hair was already quite healthy, so Eva Scrivo, NYC Salon Owner and Master Colorist for Wella, knew she wasn’t going to take off too much. Instead, she opted to clean up the shape and leave her layers long. “The weight up front adds drama and glamour,” says Eva. To freshen up Mina’s cut, Eva parted her hair on the side and then used a razor to create a zigzag effect at the ends which adds volume all over.

Brightening Up With Beachy Highlights
Mina’s naturally dark hair color needed some beachy highlights to brighten it up. “Light blonde would look unnatural, so we went with a wheat color all over and mixed in some dark warm blonde highlights throughout,” says Eva. She applied a low ammonia formula to gently lift Mina’s color, then hand painted highlights using long, sweeping motions. Working in a circular pattern, Eva created even, layered highlights throughout Mina’s hair to visibly lighten and brighten her hair hue. Wella’s Color Blending technique is a great option to achieve a very natural and multi-dimensional color that creates a halo of shine around the head. Next, Eva applied a toner to help blend in the highlights and bring down any brassiness. Mina’s dark brows were also lightened by two shades to keep the contrast between her hair and brows from looking drastic.

Mina eye makeup summer makeover

Perking Up With Peacock Shadows
Mina’s big brown eyes were the perfect canvas for creating a watercolor shadow effect that would bring out her best feature. “Blue shadows play up brown eyes, so I created a peacock shadow effect by layering shadows of aqua, green, blue and yellow. The pattern extends past the outer edges of her eyes so it’s very 1980′s, but with a soft, modern edge,” says Vinnetta Scrivo, Makeup Artist for Eva Scrivo Salons. She then added a chocolate brown shade of false lashes to softly enhance her eye shape and swept a warm bronzer all over to give Mina’s olive skin tone a subtle glow. To complete the look, Vinnetta filled in Mina’s lips with a lip-tone matching liner, then layered a clear gloss over it to add depth and dimension.

Staff Summer Makeover: Megan Makes A Red Hot Statement

Sometimes getting a new summer look involves little more than dusting on some bronzer and adding a few highlights. Other times, as with Daily Makeover’s Associate Editor Megan McIntyre, it calls for a total beauty transformation. Megan’s busy schedule didn’t give her time to get her hair cut regularly and as a result she was sporting a shapeless, grown out cut that took too much time to style and looked a little blah. “I’m not a high maintenance person. I want something that plays up my hair’s natural texture and that I can wash and wear instead of spending tons of time styling,” says Megan.

A Haircut That Gets Attention

Megan hair cut summer makeover

One look at Megan’s long, lackluster hair and Eva Scrivo, NYC Salon Owner and Master Colorist for Wella, knew that some serious length was going to have to go. She cut off a whopping 8 inches of dead and dry hair and used a razor to give Megan an inverted bob — shorter in the back at the nape of her neck with longer, face-framing layers in the front. “This short, mid-length cut softens the chin area and makes her look younger. Inverting the cut creates a heaviness around the face that looks softer and more interesting,” says Eva.

A Scorching New Hair Color

Megan hair color summer makeover

Megan’s natural light brown hair looked mousy and was washing out her already fair complexion. Alyson Pemoulié, Senior Colorist at the Eva Scrivo Salons, wanted to give Megan a look that would complement her pale skin and green eyes, so she decided to take her from boring brown to red hot using Wella’s new Koleston Perfect Vibrant Red shades. The new formulation extends the life of the color, which is ideal for red hair color since it fades faster than other shades. Alyson used a hair painting technique to hand paint highlights and lowlights into Megan’s hair to add dimension. She then applied a coppery strawberry blonde demi-permanent glaze to give her a warm, golden red that drastically brightened up her existing look. Megan’s dark brows were also lightened to match her hair and make her “look like she was born a redhead,” says Alison.

Megan final makeup look summer makeover

A Lip Look That Sizzles
Megan’s new bold red haircolor begged for a statement lip look to complete her high-drama makeover. Rire engine red lips were the perfect match. Vinnetta Scrivo, Makeup Artist for Eva Scrivo Salons, moisturized Megan’s lips with a balm, then applied a lip primer and a cherry red lipstick. “The primer makes the color last longer and look shinier,” says Vinnetta. Clay eye shadow was dusted on her lids and individual brown lashes were placed on the corners of her eyes to open them up. The finishing touch was a swipe of prune-colored mascara on the lashes, a color that Vinetta says really “blends in with her hair and makes the whole look very natural.”

Staff Summer Makeover: Leslie Goes For Bronze

Summer beauty is all about looking natural, effortless, and glowing–everything that Leslie Dumpit, Editorial Producer for Daily Makeover, felt her current look lacked. She was sick of spending the majority of her mornings mustering up some bounce with a curling iron and didn’t know which makeup shades to use to ratchet up her radiance without looking too done up. “I usually have to curl the ends of my hair to add fullness and it takes up way too much of my time. I wanted a subtle change for the summer that would decrease my styling time but also make me look more lively,” says Leslie.

leslie-hair-cut-summer-makeover.jpg

A Haircut That Creates Body
It took only seconds for Eva Scrivo, NYC Salon Owner and Master Colorist for Wella, to figure out that Leslie’s cut could be easily updated by snipping in some long layers to boost body and eliminate the need for a curling iron. “I didn’t take any length off, but cut layers throughout her nape area that went up to two-inches from her longest ends to build body,” says Eva. She also created some cheekbone-grazing bangs using a straight razor. “A straight edge razor really creates a clean line and this bang length will bring out her beautiful cheekbones,” says Eva.

Highlights That Make A Brunette Sparkle

Lelie summer Hair Color Makeover - process

Leslie’s natural hair color is a rich dark chocolate brown that needed some depth to break it up. “Using Wella’s Koleston Perfect Rich Naturals shades, I applied a mix of caramel and milk chocolate highlights all to lighten up the heaviness of a dark color and create these eye-catching, glimmering bits that are perfect for summer,” says Alyson Pemoulié, Senior Colorist at the Eva Scrivo Salons. Alyson placed the highlights all throughout her hair, not just on the upper layers, so that the highlights enhance her long layers and create dimension all over.

Bronze Makeup That Brings Out Leslie’s Features

Leslie’s natural warm golden skin tone is a perfect match for this summer’s bronze and gold metallic makeup.

“To accentuate her cheekbones I swept a warm bronzer right underneath them, then layered light gold, copper and bronze eye shadows on her lids,” says Vinnetta Scrivo, makeup Artist for Eva Scrivo Salons. A few false eyelashes were added to the outer corners of her eyes to create a flirty effect and peachy gold gloss was swept on her lips to finish off the look. Vinetta’s finishing touch: A dab of facial serum along the top of Leslie’s cheekbones. “This creates light reflection and a natural glowy look makes the cheekbones pop,” says Vinnetta.

Staff Summer Makeover: Kristin Polishes Her Brunette Bob

Summer is a time of transformation, and no one embraces that concept more than Bridal Beauty Q&A Blog Editor Kristin Booker. After shedding an impressive amount of weight (61 lbs!), Kristin had focused so much time and energy on getting her body back in shape that she had let her beauty maintenance slip. “I promised myself that this would be the summer when I would be sexy and feminine from head to toe,” says Kristin. “I’ve worked hard for this weight loss, I’ve earned it!”

A Cut That Makes Short Hair Look Longer
Kristin was trying to grow out her chin length bob, so she wasn’t sure how to shape it up without cutting off some length. Eva Scrivo, NYC Salon Owner and Master Colorist for Wella, has a sneaky cutting technique that actually makes short hair look longer and grow out nicely. “Kristin’s hair has too much width, which makes everything look wider and shorter,” says Eva. Thinning out the sides makes her style appear more vertical, which creates the illusion of longer hair as well as a leaner face shape.

Kristin Hair Color Makeover - process

A Warm Hue That Spices Up Boring Brown
Kristin’s flat brunette color was washing out her complexion, so Alyson Pemoulié, Senior Colorist at the Eva Scrivo Salons, used rich golden dark chocolate shades from the new Wella Professionals’ Koleston Perfect permanent color line to lift and brighten her color. “Her skin tone is very cool and this rich color really warms it up and makes her glow,” says Alyson.

A Smoky Grey Eye Suitable For Day Or Night
Kristin’s minimal makeup routine wasn’t doing anything to enhance her gorgeous features. Vinnetta Scrivo, Makeup Artist for Eva Scrivo Salons, created a soft grey smoky eye that made Kristin’s brown eyes pop. The soft matte taupey grey shadow looks light, fresh and perfect for long humid days and hot summer nights. “I wanted to add dimension to Kristin’s eyes, so I applied a strip of bottom false lashes on her top lashline — they’re shorter than the top false lashes so they add more depth and enhance her eye shape,” says Vinnetta. She finished the look off with a dusting of rosy pink blush on the apples of cheeks and a sheer pink gloss on lips to keep them fresh.
