How to Distract from a Bad Haircut

A bad haircut feels like the worst possible thing that can happen to us. We finally decide to take the plunge and get a great new hairstyle, only to realize we hate it. It’s just hair, and it will grow back, but how do we distract from it until we can cope with our locks again?

Draw attention elsewhere.
“Wear something that will take the focus off of your hair—like bright lipstick,” says celeb hairstylist Julia Papworth. The ultimate goal is to accessorize and distract people from noticing your new cut by attracting them to another feature or aspect.

Color it.
Ever notice how multi-dimensional hair color can enhance the appearance of a choppy cut? Consider replacing your highlights and lowlights with a single process. One color can distract from that unfortunate haircut.

Add volume.
“Having curls will hide grown-out layers, split ends, and and an uneven cut,” says Beverly Hills stylist, Lindsey Carse, owner of Fringe Salon. Curls can add shape and also distract from what is going on beneath. Plus, the best way to hide if you lost a bit more length than you want is to wave things up and make your hair look bigger and bolder than ever before.

Wear it up.
It’s happened to all of us—a bad length, layers we hate, etc. This is a great time to find fun ways to wear it up, like in a great top knot or bun. You can get creative and have fun with your hair, rather than hide from it, until you feel confident enough to wear it down again.

And never try to fix it yourself.
We’ve all gotten a bad blowout and gone home to wash and redo it ourselves. It happens. Never try to kick that up a notch and re-cut your own hair. Never mind that you will likely have trembling hands and frazzled nerves. Sure, a new cut is a great way of dealing with a bad cut—but that isn’t a sign you should do so yourself. You’ll likely make a bad situation far worse.

Aim for growth.
Hair does grow, especially when you take care of it. Avoid excessive use of heat tools, eat right, drink lots of water, and consider taking a vitamin supplement. You’ll have lots of fresh new hair in no time.

Don’t be afraid to fake it until you make it.
Hair extensions can be your very best friend. If you hate your hair length and know you will feel more confident with longer hair,  get longer hair! You can choose whether you want clip-ins or a more permanent solution, but you can cover up your true length while giving your locks time to grow.
