Sultry temperatures often result in less-than-sexy issues, like sweaty faces, sunburns and staticky hair, but we won’t let that stop us from enjoying ourselves. At least, not when we’re armed with a veritable cornucopia of unexpected tips and tricks that put our summer beauty woes right back in their respective places.
Problem: Limp Hair
Solution: Your go-to lazy morning hairstyle can accomplish more than just hiding your second-day hair—it’s also an instant solution for limp, lackluster locks. Twist your hair into a knot, then secure with a chopstick. Butterfly Studio Salon Founder Kattia Solano prefers chopsticks over ponytail holders because “they will never leave marks in your hair, and will hold the style so it won’t move.” Leave the updo in place for 10 to 20 minutes, then release the knot for increased volume and movement.
Solution: It’s not just for drinking (or for making ice cream): Cold milk is also a potent sunburn soother. Soak a clean washcloth in a bowl with equal parts skim milk, ice cubes and cold water. Hold the cold compress to sunburnt areas for five minutes, then repeat. The cool sensation of the mixture reduces swelling and inflammation on contact, while the proteins in milk develop a protective film over the skin to help ease discomfort. Just don’t let it happen again.
Problem: Frizzy or Staticky Hair
Solution: There’s no need to hit the nearest Sephora for this problem-solver, because there’s a good chance it’s already in your handbag—or at least on your desk. Solano says, “The best quick fix for frizz or static is a bit of hand cream. The conditioning qualities help to calm your hair and lightly give weight to unruly strands.” If you don’t already keep a travel-sized lotion on hand, you can find it almost anywhere, whether it’s from a friend, the nearest pharmacy, or in the bathroom at a restaurant or bar.
Problem: Scalp Buildup
Solution: Scalp buildup can happen year round, but it’s especially exacerbated in the summer, when a sweaty scalp is the norm. Solano shared her DIY “hair spritzer” recipe with us, and it’s every bit as amazing as she claims. Mix a half cup of sparkling water, a half cup of apple cider vinegar, and the juice from a quarter of a lemon into a spray bottle and apply to dry hair from roots to ends until the hair is fully saturated. Massage the mixture into your scalp for a few minutes as it absorbs, then rinse thoroughly. Follow up with a clarifying shampoo and, if desired, your favorite hair mask. Keep the DIY theme going by adding a natural fruit, nut or vegetable oil for an additional moisture boost.
Problem: Sore Feet
Solution: Hitting the pavement (or the beach!) in sandals all summer long isn’t exactly easy on our feet. The result? Blisters, dryness, aching…the list goes on. Skky Hadley, celebrity manicurist and owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, has another great recipe to add to your summer shopping list. Take two whole cucumbers, two tablespoons of lemon juice, and two tablespoons of olive oil, and blend in a blender until pureed. Put the mixture in a bowl and heat it up until it’s warm but not hot, then distribute the mixture evenly into two separate Ziploc baggies. Slide your feet right in and massage the concoction all over for 5-10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Hadley recommends this recipe because cucumber refreshes and revives skin, lemon exfoliates, and olive oil moisturizes for baby-soft feet.
Problem: Oily Skin
Solution: Milk of magnesia and Pepto Bismol are both digestive aids, and they both serve an unexpected off-label purpose: They soak up the oils and impurities in your skin and help to relieve acne. Unlike powder or traditional mattifiers, milk of magnesia has a cumulative effect, meaning consistent use actually improves the look of skin over time. You can use a thick layer as a 20-minute mask or sparingly and blended as a primer for smooth, super-matte skin that lasts all day. We swear we didn’t make this up, but we kind of wish we did.
