Could You Do A Bob?
Jennifer Aniston, Brooklyn Decker and Vanessa Hudgens surprised everyone recently when they chopped off their famously long locks and debuted hot new bobs for spring. Bobs are the perfect hairstyle for the spring and summer–but is a bob right for you? We spoke to Dove celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend to get the lowdown on all things bobbed.

What exactly is a bob, you ask? Mark Townsend says, “There are so many variations on this classic haircut that I have a hard time technically defining what a bob is, but for me a bob is a haircut that falls between the chin and the shoulders in length and the focus is usually on the ends, be it asymmetrical, blunt cut, or textured, [like Scarlett Johansson's].”

As Townsend said, there are many variations on the classic bob. “Some of my favorites are the asymmetrical bob, similar to the one I gave Ashley Olsen. I layered the back and kept the front about 3 inches longer than the back and did not cut any layers in the front. I love that she could wear this cut both super sleek and straight or edgy and messy. ”

“I also love the very blunt cut bob like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s,” Townsend says, “I cut her hair to the same length all over, just at the chin, and just a very light layer on top. This [cut] works so great with her naturally wavy hair.

Another favorite is the layered bob, similar to January Jones’ cut. Jones’ bob falls a couple inches past her chin, and Townsend put lots of layers in her hair.

The great thing about bobs is that they can be personalized to suit any face shape. According to Townsend, “The ultimate goal is to make the face appear to be oval. If you have a heart shape face, go with a side part and a swept over fringe to make the forehead appear smaller. If you have a round face, keep layers on the sides longer. If you have a square face, try an off center part and start face framing layers at the chin. Katharine McPhee’s layered bob suits her perfectly.

“Your hair type and texture should help determine which kind of bob you get.” Townsend advises, “If you have very fine hair, then I would recommend a chin-length bob with blunt ends and a light layer on top for fullness. If you have very thick hair, I recommend a longer bob with layers to avoid the triangle effect that can happen without layers. It is really smart to talk with your stylist and be honest about your expectations.”

One of the biggest misconceptions about getting a bob is that it will cut down on the amount of time it takes to style your hair. “If you are looking to save time in your styling routine, then make sure you get a bob that will work with your hair’s natural texture. If you have very thick, curly hair than it is going to take you quite a bit of styling time every day if you want a straight, sleek bob,” Townsend says.

Bobs can lose their shape faster than a longer hairstyle, so be prepared to make more frequent trips to the salon. Your hairstyle will probably need to be spruced up every 4 to 6 weeks.

Bring in pictures of bobs that you like to give your stylist a visual and a starting point. From there, a good stylist will recommend the right haircut for your hair type and face shape. “A bob is generally not an easy haircut to grow out, so if it’s a badly cut bob, growing it out can be really difficult.” Your hair probably won’t be long enough to cut into a new style for 4 to 6 weeks.
