That’s why we went to Herbal Essences celebrity stylist Charles Baker Strahan to get his tips on how you can get great-looking hair, all year-round.

Oil, dirt and styling product residue can all build up in hair over time, leading to a dull, lackluster appearance. To get Katie Holmes‘ super-shiny strands, Strahan suggests using this deep-cleaning DIY recipe: Mist a mixture of half water and half vinegar on dry hair and let sit for 10-15 minutes. Add a moisturizing shampoo directly to unwashed hair. Rinse and repeat, then follow with conditioner.

Hair can only take so much abuse from chemical treatments before it starts to look damaged. Strahan says your best bet for healthy hair like Gabrielle Union‘s is to choose one chemical treatment, so no more doubling up on highlights and keratin ladies! “My rule of thumb is choose just one chemical procedure,” says Strahan. “If you color your hair, only do color. If texturization is more important, try to avoid color and stick to glosses if you need color.”

Each season brings its own weather-related problems–frizz, humidity, dry air–but they all have one common solution: Moisture. “Properly hydrated hair has the best opportunity to fight any external conditions, which is why hydration is so important,” says Strahan. Excessive use of heat-styling tools is what causes hair to look and feel damaged. So while you may want straight, blown-out hair like Rose Byrne‘s every day, you need to go easy with the blowdryer. “Less is more when it comes to styling. Utilize ceramic and ionic technology with your styling tools–this will help cut down on damage,” says Strahan.

Split ends are a fact of life, but you can minimize them–and the damage done to your hair–by seeing your stylist for regular haircuts. “Hair grows roughly a 1/2 inch per month at uneven rates, much like grass in your yard. For basic maintenance, you should get your hair cut every 4-6 weeks. If you are growing hair out, cut your hair every 8-10 weeks,” says Strahan. If you want to give your hair an instant boost, Strahan suggests adding color to your strands–even a little hint, like Selena Gomez‘s ombre ends, perks hair up and adds flattering dimension. “Small tonal integrations can create a great visual change and variety as the seasons change,” he says.

When you try to manipulate your hair into being something it’s not naturally, you end up torturing it and all that abuse will show with frizz, split ends and a general blah appearance.
