As the resident beauty expert for Barneys New York, Jason Ascher is the go-to guy for all things cosmetic. And now that the new season is here, he advises seeking out the makeup mode that’s best suited to your complexion. Our friends at BellaSugar asked Ascher which fashionable new hues–like Zoe Kravitz’s peach lip color–are best for your skin tone.

“Too much bronzer is a nightmare for pale skin,” Ascher says. Instead, apply an illuminating cream, like Fresh Twilight Freshface Glow. If you must bronze, keep it light–Bobbi Brown Illuminating Bronzing Powder in Maui is perfect for a sheer, natural-looking glow like Alison Brie’s.

For mid-depth skin, Ascher advises going light and creamy. “Light pinks and pastels [like Leona Lewis'] look great on this skin,” he says. Brighten up with Nars Cream Blush in Penny Lane and Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Lip Gloss in Shell Pink.

For deep tones, Ascher recommends “natural nudes” that are close to your own skin, like Gabrielle Union. Many designers, including Michael Kors, D&G, and Vera Wang played with barely-there makeup on the 2011 Spring runways. Layer two silky shades, like Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede, and get a subtle lip look with Armani Beauty Sheer Lipstick in 50.
