This classic cut never gets old. Long layers, like Kirsten Dunst’s, that start below the chin lengthen round faces. Subtle layers also help to keep strands from falling flat. For more volume, Nicholas Penna Jr., owner and lead stylist of SalonCapri Boston suggests this technique: “Blow dry your hair while brushing the ends outward over a round brush. This creates the impression of movement and added volume.”

“The bangs are texturized rather than blunt now, which gives a soft piece-y look,” says Nicholas. The key to choosing a hairstyle for a heart-shaped face is to bring attention away from the chin. Piecey bangs like Taylor Swift’s put the focus on her eyes and cheekbones.

With celebs like Nicole Richie and Nicole Kidman chopping off their long locks, it’s obvious the bob isn’t going anywhere this year. “The bobs are now chin-length or just below, which creates versatility for the hair,” says Nicholas. This haircut is perfect for heart shapes, like Brittany Snow, because it hits just below the jaw, filling in the area around the chin.

Long and straight hair softens the angles of the face, especially for a square, angular jaw like Lea Michele’s. For an on-trend update, Nicholas suggests a blunt cut at the tips (instead of the choppy ends we’ve seen for awhile). “The blunt haircut allows for a more straight and sleek look. You can slick it back and create a wet look or put it in a thick, low ponytail, which were two popular hairstyles seen at Fashion Week.”

Texture is another way to take attention away from an angular jaw. “The lob [long bob] is now messy and a bit tousled,” says Nicholas. Think of Giuliana Rancic on the Oscars red carpet. “A good addition to this look are bangs with long, heavy pieces that end at the cheekbone,” says celebrity hairstylist and Target design partner Umberto. “This adds versatility for a straight, piece-y style with movement and body. It also easily transitions from a daytime look to a tousled evening look.”

Also referred to as “The Karlie” after model Karlie Kloss’ recent cut, it consists of hair that is “cut one length with slight layers in the front,” Nicholas explains. “Lengths can vary somewhere between the chin and shoulders.” Because oval faces can sometimes look long, it’s best to get a cut that breaks up that length with layers and soft texture.
