There’s a reason why Jennifer Aniston, 42, has the most enviable hair in Hollywood: It contains that magic trifecta of features that can make you look totally vibrant and youthful. “Highlights around the face, incredible shine, and an uncontrived movement are key to getting a great healthy, youthful look,” explains Herbal Essences celebrity hairstylist Charles Baker Strahan. Light pieces around the face will make your skin look more radiant, while light-reflecting shine and a swingy movement give an overall impression of being in excellent health.

Gone are the days when women “of a certain age” (whatever that means) where expected to wear their hair at an above-shoulder length. Demi Moore, 48, is an excellent example of how you can continue to wear long hair as you age gracefully. “It’s her signature look and it works because it’s so shiny and looks very lush,” says Strahan. Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner daily to boost shine and make hair easy to style. We’re loving the new Clairol Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Shampoo and Conditioner ($2.99 each.)

The bob is still a strong trend and Viola Davis, 46, has the perfect mix of shape, layers, shine. “The shape of this bob makes her cheeks look fuller, which creates a very youthful appearance,” explains Strahan. Also, bangs can cover up forehead wrinkles, but be careful, because they also cast shadows over your eyes, which could exacerbate the appearance of dark under eye circles.

“Anything too contrived will age you,” explains Strahan. Here, Ali Landry, 38, got it right by loosely pulling her hair back and leaving a few tendrils falling around her face. “The look is very soft and feminine, and definitely makes her look younger,” he says. “I actually can’t believe she’s 38!” Rub a dab of shine serum between palms, then run over your hair to boost shine. Try the new Dove Nutritive Therapy Nourishing Oil Care Anti-Frizz Serum ($4.74, available at Walgreens in-store only) which doesn’t weigh hair down.

As for updos, stick to the same core goals: it should look uncontrived and bring light to your face. Here, Christina Applegate, 39, is wearing a great youthful updo. “The off-center bun is a great modern twist, and the little piece that falls along her face softens the look,” says Strahan. “You definitely want to avoid a stiff updo or slicking all of your hair back which tends to look too harsh,” he warns. Keep the look in place with a hairspray that doesn’t make you look like you have helmet head like Herbal Essences Body Envy Volumizing Hairspray ($2.99.)

“What’s so youthful about this look is that it shows off one shoulder, which is very sexy and elongates the appearance of her neck,” says Strahan. Of course, Rachel Weisz, 41, also has tons of body and volume in her hair. To get the look, sweep your hair to one side and use a few bobby pins at the back of your nap to keep the neckline clean.

“Long, wispy and face-framing bangs can help side crows’ feet,” says Strahan. Here, Paul Abdul, 49, has them styled perfectly: they’re piecey across her foreard so as not to be overwhelm her eyes, then gently brush the outer corner of her eyes to cover up any wrinkles.

If you want a really short, easy hairstyle take a cue from Patricia Heaton, 53, who has recently adopted this choppy crop. It’s especially great for fine hair types who don’t have the natural volume to wear long hairstyles. “Hair needs to look like it can move, and this look has a lot of fun texture,” says Strahan.
